Why Honor Is Important

If you were to ask someone whether winning an Academy Award or a Nobel prize is better, a lot of people would be divided and a lot of people would be confused, and would go on to decide based on their own personal preference as opposed to actually analyzing it. That’s why asking this question is near impossible to figure out. What is the greatest honor? Let’s begin by looking at challenges and achievements a human being can achieve that are worthy of honor. First, the physical ones. Being the fastest person to run a marathon, 26.2 miles is outstanding, but why stop there? The Ironman triathlon consists of swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and then running an entire marathon after that. The record holder Marino Vanhoenacker managed …show more content…
But let’s define honor, there are two people’s definitions we should look at. The first is Noah Webster whose American Dictionary is the reason Americans spell it H-O-N-O-R, the second person is Samuel Johnson whose English Dictionary is why people across the Atlantic spell it H-O-N-O-U-R. Johnson differentiated two types of honor that are relevant to the question in the beginning. The first is what he called nobility of soul, magnanimity, and the scorn of meanness, this honor is not derived from something competitive, but rather from perceived virtuous conduct, your integrity, and good morals. But what counts as a merit, a virtue? One of the best attempts to catalog and organize human virtues was done by Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman. They attached important figures in history believed to personify each trait and their list of 24, included such things as fairness, humility, hope, humor, appreciation of beauty and the love of learning. Using their list as a scorecard for virtue points to determine the most honorable person is impossible, but that hasn’t stopped people from discussing honor in terms of virtue. Richard Nixon did a couple things most people would consider dishonorable, but his perspective really gives a good illustration of honor. …show more content…

In the year of 1997, a survey was conducted by US News & World Report which asked people who they thought was likely go to heaven as a marker of how they acted and their personal integrity, it really is illuminating. 52 percent said that Bill Clinton would, 60 percent thought that Princess Diana would, and a full 79 percent said Mother Teresa would go to heaven, but she only ranked in at second place. 87 percent of the people surveyed said that someone else would go to heaven. Who do you they think that was? Themselves.
The greatest honor a country bestows upon someone for going above and beyond the call of duty varies from country to country. The greatest military honor in the U.K is the Victoria Cross. In the U.S it is the Medal of Honor, given for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, at the risk of life, much above what is required from you. They are people who reacted almost instantly and without regard for their own safety. Many of the people who earned the medal are honored after
