"Dumdiddleydumdum, dumdum" is the riff that has inspired multiple songs and many artists. In "Liberating the Students Voice" Mark Holding explains to his students how this applies to college essays. They all must follow a set of rules but in the end, they are all completely different. This seemed very interesting to me since I have never seen it in that way. For instance, The Who and Bow Wow Wow are both from complete two different music genres but they somehow found a way to use the same riff that Bo Diddley created in 1955.…

After reading Paul Graham’s essay entitled “The Age of the Essay”, Michael Dickens brings up the a great point of spending one month per semester on writing essays. I too believe this is a great way for students to develop unique writing skills or even strive to improve on their writing. I’ve notice in class we don’t take much time to learn how to write a proper essay. We just read articles, literature and write it into a traditional hamburger format essay being intro, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. This does not allow me to improve on my writing nor challenges me to improve my writing in any way.…

It wasn’t just my English classes for which I was required to write an essay, but also in almost all my classes, from Honors Biology to Honors Modern U.S History, from Sociology to Shakespeare--there were papers to write. In all of these classes for which I composed an essay, I always did my best and received a grade of at least a B+. The essays I wrote were not just an assignment; I also enjoyed writing them. I was able to get down on paper my knowledge about a certain subject or topic that I wasn’t able to communicate in class. In addition, I was able to contribute ideas so that my teachers could see that I understood the material, which was one of the things I liked best about writing essays.…

Sit yourself behind your keyboard and imagine, invent, inspire, but most of all enjoy. There are many parts that go into writing a good essay over and above the enjoyment that we must first learn and embrace; Such as basic spelling, grammar, having a strong Thesis statement as well as a focused and well organized topic. When you lack any of the basic writing fundamentals you are simply hurting any opportunity you may have to achieve a well written paper. Aside from grammar, spelling, a strong topic and a well written thesis; in my opinion, the…

Throughout my first semester of college level English, there were various pieces of writing that I had to develop. A large range of them were opinionated, which is something I am not used to. In high school, teachers would tell the students exactly what type of essay to write and how to write it. High school papers were extremely concise in a way that a student was not allowed to think too far out of the box; ideas were stifled. This semester I was able to write essays on topics that I could relate to.…

My fellow peers, with the start of college never being more imminent than it is today, we must prep for the rigor of the classes, especially writing classes we will take at San Jose State University. Writing classes in high school are entirely different from writing classes in college, and some students may need to adjust to the new system. To be a writer in college means to be able to understand the works presented to you. In college, we will be exposed to new literary works of art, some even prevailing from ancient times, so we will need to be able to have the tools needed to decipher these literary works.…

The Story Behind my Learning I am a senior in high school which means I have learned, for 13 years of my life, how to read, write, look for details in a writing, close read, and how to fix my own writing. That seems like a lot, but I know that I still do not know everything about reading and writing. I can’t specifically remember the first time I started to read, however I do remember maybe in first or second grade, copying words over and over again trying to learn how to spell them. Then, I definitely remember in third grade starting to write in cursive and learning how the sign my name.…

Writing in Elementary and Middle school had always been straightforward. Writing an essay would always consist of five paragraphs: an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The first time I had ever written an essay was in third grade. Before that, the most we would write would usually contained one or two paragraphs. The topic appointed to the class was on the five senses and how we used them daily.…

When thinking about an essay, it seems like it is involved with every relevant topic in the world today. There are so many different types of essays that the real description of an essay has been lost. One of our greatest desires is to find out why essays matter as much as they do. It seems as if our careers are based on a five-paragraph paper that if we do not achieve it to perfection then we will succumb to the bottom of society.…

Rebecca Schuman, a columnist for slate.com, wrote an article that required essays in colleges are nothing but a waste of time for both the teacher and students. The student will either find a way to have the paper written for them, plagiarize the whole paper, borrow the paper, or not even do it. While the teachers have to spend countless hours reading each and every single paper, correcting, rereading, fixing mistakes, and adding comments; all things that students probably will not care about one bit. So the teacher is really wasting the classes time by assigning something that only students who really care about will do. Plus a teacher does not get paid enough to put in all of the extra work, so a teacher is not only wasting the classes time,…

Throughout my middle and high school life, I’ve come to dislike writing essays to a point where I am trying to find every way possible to avoid unto this day. Yes, you’re right; I am not enjoying writing this essay, mainly because writing is always been my weak point. In college, students are piled each week with homework’s up to their throat, but nightmare doesn’t stop there. You know it’s coming and although you try as hard as possible to brace yourself, it never works, as for hearing your professor happily say “Essays are due next week”, brings chills down your back and a killer headache as you come to realize your weekend plans are out the door. Sunday night, after trying to be productive all day, I finally sit down and put my hands on the keyboard, and start typing the essay that I should have started a couple days ago. Yeah, you can call me a procrastinator, and I admit that. I have never been good at writing essays. Even if it’s just a small paragraph of summary, it will usually take me much longer to finish it. Essays are exhausting and emotional torture-devices that drain me of my energy and capacity for joy. However, in a high school environment, they are necessary for gaining the skillset to be an adult with writing skills and experience with deadlines. When I hear mention of an essay looming on the horizon, I become a beacon of ideas full of brilliance and witty humor which all but abandon me as I leave the room, forgetting the assignment in its entirety. When I remember it, I procrastinate (obviously) and eventually panic to plan, compose,…
