Why Hockey Players Are Better Than Figure Skaters

Improved Essays
My biggest pet peeve is Hockey players that think they are better than figure skaters. The often seem to always look down on us like we’re not as important as they are. The first time I remember seeing it happening was just during practice hockey players would always come early and get in the way during skating rink time. Recently when hockey practice was before us, they stayed late and took some of our time on the ice. The rink has open skating and open hockey. There are never skaters their during open hockey. But there are always hockey players at open skate. It drives me and most other skaters I know insane. The last time I was at open skate the hockey players took up the entire ice while playing a game. They would race back and forth while skaters were trying to practice or skate around. They got in the way a lot …show more content…
The hockey stop would make a spray of icy snow and they tried to spray anybody that wasn’t a hockey skater. They almost never are actually able to spray anybody, but it’s still annoying when they try. Skaters can do hockey stops too, we just don’t try to spray other people because we’re not rude. It has always been something that annoyed me, but as I skate more and more, it annoys me more and more. I don’t see why they seem to think they are better than figure skaters. All they do is play the same game, nothing changes, it just gets more difficult. Figure skating may start out easy, but in the long run, it is a lot more difficult. Any figure skater can learn to play hockey, but most hockey players couldn’t figure skate to save their life. I’ve seen them try, it didn’t end well. We could tell them off more often, but I don’t think that would change much if anything. The rink we use is run by hockey, so they get the first choices. I could just ignore it, but that will be

In February of 2002, at the Winter Olympics taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah, two Canadian figure skaters were trapped during what was the most high-profile judging scandal of all time. At no fault of their own, the pair consisting of Jamie Salé and David Pelletier lost their chance at the gold medal when a French judge voted in favour of the Russian pair. Thus, the Russians claimed the gold medal and the Canadians settled for silver. When confronted, the French judge admitted to being pressured by the head of the French skating organization to rank the Russians higher than Salé and Pelletier. This would ensure a favourable ranking for the French pair later in the week.…

During the game I saw some inappropriate behavior executed by the spectators on the UC Davis side. I noticed this inappropriate behavior during the game when the opposing team was awarded a free throw. The spectators from the Davis side, which also included Band-Uh, would start making noises, such a making an "ahhhhhh" sound whenever the player was getting ready to shoot the ball into the hoop. Although I know that the intention was to distract the player from concentrating, I thought it was inappropriate considering that the spectators from the other team did not do this when the Davis team was awarded a free throw. In addition, I feel that carrying out these types of behavior as a spectator is interfering in the performance of the athletes.…

As I stood in line waiting for the doors at Chelsea Piers Sports Complex to open a woman behind me questioned the bleacher already filled with youth hockey players, the man in front of me answered that many of the girls teams around Stamford had purchased tickets. I couldn’t help but chime in that I was glad they were getting seated first and he agreed, saying he’d be happy to stand, the girls are who are important today. With the inaugural game of the NWHL young girls sporting sticks and skates have a new type of role model, a type of female hockey player that is not playing merely as a hobby but as a career.…

If there were rules where every child must get to take part in the game, then everyone would enjoy it more and less kids would quit. Jessica Statsky’s essay Children Need to Play Not Compete,” is about how damaging sports can be on children (152-157). In her essay, she cites research that explains one of “the most common reasons children give for quitting, aside from lack of interest is the lack of playing time” (154, par. 6). When a kid does not play in any games they will feel like they are not needed or wanted on the team and they will quit. Statsky implies that children who stand out for their athletic ability are selected to get the most playing time while the others who still might be “on the verge of developing the necessary strength…

The list could go on and on about what is wrong with high school sports in this generation. It starts when they’re young, parent coaches who only qualify because they played the specific sport when they were younger. That is brought into high school, with their child playing the same sport they “coach”, not getting to experience anything other than what their parent’s knowledge and what they could tell them. I’m not saying all high school athletes who are coached by their parents aren’t going to get any better, but I am saying that if you are going to hire a coach for a program, make sure they are more qualified than just being a parent in the district or having a little playing experience. High school is the preparation stage for college, both academically and athletically.…

I have grown up watching, playing, and studying many different sports, whether it be football, or baseball, or basketball, or sometimes even soccer. I have always enjoyed playing sports, however, as an athlete, I have a distinct responsibility to practice sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is one of the most important facets of sports today. Sportsmanship allows us athletes to hate the other team for the duration of the game, but respect them at the same time. Sportsmanship is defined as “fair-play, respect for opponents, and polite behavior by someone in a competition.”…
