Why High School Should Be Mandatory

Despite living in a revolutionary time period surrounded by unimaginable advancements, it’s the little things that leave me lost for words. Children lucky enough to live in a developed country are presented with the opportunity of education, but many are not as fortunate. In 2009, 42% of children eligible for secondary school did not attend. (QUOTE) High school provides individuals with fundamental skills and the ability to learn trades. The value of this gift is so powerful, as the average Canadian income is 4 times more than most developing countries. High school acts as an influential home for teens, providing the necessary role models needed for positive development. Teens at high school improve their skills of face to face communication, and strengthen their social skills. High school education insures a safe environment for youth, instead of the sketchy streets full of regretful behaviours. Students are around teachers for an astounding 40 hours a week, making them the most influential people in their lives. High school teachers “not only watch students grow and help them grow, but also answer their questions and listen to their problems”. (QUOTE) Having someone who students can come to for guidance, and help resolve conflicts facilitates a positive mental well being for the student. From the parental standpoint, high school can be comforting because their teen is exposed to professional role models versus being left on the streets making poor decisions. High school promotes and allows for new challenges and experiences for the student instead of being stagnant doing the same thing day after day.
