In the article “Why has NZ society become so hard-hearted” written by Martin Thrupp, I will briefly describe the educational issue and its contested nature. This essay will also identify and critically examine the underlying values, assumptions and arguments the author is presenting. Furthermore, it will critically examine the issue from the progressive perspectives and the possibilities and limitations the tradition offers in bringing understanding to this issue.

Educational issue and its contested nature
Thrupp (2016) explores the concept of the unstable measures in New Zealand. The article was posted on a national issues website, which can be accessed internationally. The writer acts a reporter, who often interviews and presents others interpretations. Since it is public, people are able to read and write their thoughts by posting it as a comment under the article. This is an educational issue because inequality is evident in schools and education is vital for students as it widens horizons beyond their social experiences and increases individuals awareness of choice. It discusses the broad ideas of poverty and inequality being a significant factor in education and the fundamental reasons for these ideas. Thrupp (2016) talks about the rising prices of the houses in the market, which may distress living conditions of families in a low class status and impacting on student’s education.
