Ban on handguns in the United States

The controversy between banning and not banning handguns in the United States has been a hot topic for quite a while now. People often equate guns with harmful and dangerous situations. However, handguns owned by civilians have protected and saved countless lives. I personally think there should not be a ban on handguns in the United States. In current events there have been numerous occasions where people rather take matters into their own hands than trusting county police departments. With that being said, having people armed correctly can save numerous lives and can also depreciate crime rates since there will no longer be such a strict policy.

Senate Bill 11 was fully passed on June 13, 2015 and states “Relating to the carrying of handguns on the campuses of and certain other locations associated with institutions of higher education; providing a criminal penalty.” According to an article from the New York Times it states that “supporters say it will make college campuses safer by not preventing license gun owners from defending themselves and possibly saving lives should a mass shooting occur”. This bill would take effect in August 2016 at universities and August 2017 at community colleges. Texas will be one of eight states allowing handguns on campuses. The majority of the population want to have a way to feel safe, whether it be accomplished by staying in a group or carrying a concealed pistol. Having the reassurance of carrying a concealed pistol gives many people peace of mind. For instance, a young female college student walking across the dimly lit college parking lot will feel safer knowing that she has a way to properly defend herself if an attacker confronts her. The safer a person feels the more confidence they will have along with the ability to stay calm in a heated situation. An unarmed person may feel as they do not have the power it takes to fend off an attacker, but if such a person was armed they would feel they have something to keep them safe.…

As I as the writer of this essay am out and about on the town, I tend to go about my daily errands and just keep to myself, mind my own business and avoid being the target of any crime especially one involving a gun. If someone was to bring a firearm anywhere they go and follow all of the other normal safety measures like being aware of your surroundings, staying out of “bad” neighborhoods when possible and avoiding social conflict can sound like a reasonable thing to do. I can guarantee you that nothing is 100 percent foolproof for everyone, but the addition of the firearm would make a difference. Since guns were first introduced, they were desired by all different kinds of people from all different backgrounds. Just as John Richardson stated…

John R. Lott Jr., author of More Guns, Less Crime, reported several occurrences where there were attempts of violent attacks in which citizens had to defend themselves with a handgun. Handguns are used as more of a deterrent in cases like these. The armed criminal is more afraid of being shot than of being arrested (31-32). Through the years, American gun owners believed in a compromise over gun control laws, “give me this now, and I’ll take the rest later, is how David Hardly explains it in his article “Why Gun Owners are Right to Fight against Gun Control.” The first group targeted was the small inexpensive revolver, then the larger assault rifles, or anything that looked like a machine gun.…

The ability to protect yourself is available at a moment’s notice for those who obtain a concealed carry permit. One of the females holding a concealed carry permit stated that “women need to be able to defend their home and defend themselves if they go out. It’s just a safety issue.” (Procon.org) Gun owners have the responsibility on themselves to ensure they are their own first responders. If you have the training and can accurately hit a target, it isn’t only your right, but your responsibility to carry wherever you can.…
