Violence is a huge part of everyone’s life today no matter what neighborhood you live in or what background you come from. All you have to do is just turn to your local or national media station, chances are that there will be something that shows up about some sort of shooting or crime. This constant showing of violence has made the general population desensitized to it. The question we are asking is why does so much gun violence happen? Although the news always tries to blame mental illness for shootings, they should be taking some of the blame as well because of how much they cover the events and how it could lead to copy-cat shooters. There are many ideas as to why the United States experiences so many deaths. Some people believe that is because there are too many guns, but when you look at countries like Canada they have close to the amount of guns as us but not nearly as many shootings. The reason for the shootings may be the coverage of the shootings by news channels. Everyday it seems as if there has been another shooting and of course it is shown on the news. The media seems to always magnify the shootings for example “On April 16,2007, a college student shot and killed 32 people at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the U.S, generating a great deal of national and international media coverage” (Park). This is just one case as to where media, made it its number one priority to cover this event. The last reason that gets addressed is Movies and the entertainment business. If you take a look at todays movies and TV shows you are bound to see one that has some form of violence. Many of the top grossing movies in the industry like Skyfall, Avengers, and Mission Impossible all have gun violence that is prevelant all throughout the movie. All of these movies are pg-13 which means that young kids can go and see these violent movies. Along with video games this is another way that kids become desensitized to violence and may start to believe that the world really works just how the movies and video games work.
