Gun Control Background Gun control is a system of ordinances that limit how law-abiding citizens may buy, own, or operate firearms, varying at the federal, state, and local level. Gun legislation is an ongoing debate, in which neither side is declared “right” according to the Supreme Court. Many gun legislation activists believe that laws will solve the issue of the misuse of firearms; conversely, gun rights supporters do not seem to think that gun control works as an effective solution and that gun restriction is a direct infringement on the Second Amendment right to bear arms. In an effort to have a more credible argument against gun control, Officer Luke Arbizo was interviewed as a primary source of information. Arbizo is currently serving in the Thatcher, Arizona Police Force, and he has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He has served as a police officer for twenty five years, and is currently on his twenty sixth. During the interview about gun legislation, Arbizo stated, “They are trying to make stricter gun laws, but who is that really affecting? It’s not affecting the bad guys, because they’re always gonna have them. So they are just affecting the common citizen that obeys the law, making it so that common citizens can’t protect themselves.” What Arbizo is stating is that strict gun control laws do not affect the people that commit violent acts using weapons, but instead they affect the law-abiding citizens negatively. Citizens have a right to self-defense, as well as a right to bear arms; however, strict gun legislation infringes on those very rights. Consequently, a reliable source of self-protection becomes very difficult to obtain, even though the right to protection is a natural right of all persons; further proving that gun control, simply stated, does not …show more content…
