Benefits Of Teaching Grammar

There have been many studies conducted towards the way that grammar is taught and interpreted based on the teaching. There are many approaches that teachers can take in order to teaching grammar and making sure that the subject is being learned and applied the best way possible. While some approaches work out amazingly, there are other approaches that do not work out as well as others. While looking up many articles, I have discovered all of the different approaches that have been taken towards teaching grammar and the outcomes that they have had. Throughout this paper I will be discussing different approaches that have been taken in regards to teaching grammar and whether they are successful or unsuccessful. There are different approaches to the teaching of grammar and it is based off of the way that the teachers were taught. The way that the teacher’s their selves are taught grammar and their beliefs of grammar forms their teaching style of grammar. “Teachers avoided the need for grammatical content knowledge by approaching language teaching from a predominantly sociological, rather than linguistic perspective. (Myhill, page 79)” Some teachers took more of a predominantly sociological approach to teaching grammar rather than a linguistic perspective approach and that changed the way that students were able to learn grammar. If teachers would have taken more of a linguistic approach to teaching grammar, then the students would have had a better learning experience than the way that they learned when the teachers took a predominantly sociological approach. Depending on the way that students are taught and the knowledge that is taken from that teaching approach, affects the information that is obtained to the students. If teachers would focus on the learning styles of the students, rather than the way that they thought would be the best way to teach it, then the students would have learned grammar in a way that they were able to apply it to their knowledge base. “Curriculum expectations that students will have explicit knowledge of grammar combined with the tendency towards an absence of grammatical content knowledge in the academic experiences of English teachers generate very specific challenges for pedagogical practice and student learning. (Myhill, page 78.)” The way that these students were taught was not aimed toward grammar as a whole because it lacked the overall content of grammar. In order to be able to successfully teach grammar, it is important to teach every single aspect of grammar, rather than pieces and parts of the subject. There is no way that the students are able to obtain all of the information that they need to successfully use grammar, if they are not being taught every single aspect of grammar. “Most teachers will have experience of learners who have been taught the Present Perfect Progressive who can say ‘I’ve been learning English for X years’ before they can use this grammatical form to generate other examples. (Jones, page 320)” The students were obviously limited in what they were
