The Problem of Evil
To talk about evil, there must be a definition of evil. As a class, we defined evil as intentional, bad behavior without care or concern for others well-being. We discussed malicious acts carried out that caused harm to other people.
While trying to write this paper, I have come across more questions than answers. The original question of why good things happen to bad people, and why God allows those bad things to happen has proven difficult to answer. You could say the person had a rough childhood. Their parents didn’t give them enough attention or they were bullied by other children. Maybe they were lonely and chose to kidnap and torture someone so they would feel the same pain.
With weather, there is no real explanation. It isn’t like mother nature is mad at mankind and choses to punish using hurricanes, tornados or blizzards. There are scientific explanations such as barometric pressure and gulf stream. More times than not you will hear people blame God. During Hurricane Katrina, Pastor John Hagee said God was punishing the city of New Orleans. If we believe that God is to blame for all the suffering, why do we not praise Him when something wonderful happens? There have been several life-threatening diseases that have been contained. Smallpox is almost nonexistent. Polio and Measles have vaccines that have kept them contained for the most part. Man, may have come up with the vaccines but God must have helped in their progress. As humans, we have a hard time seeing the good for all the bad. Deep down we know it exists, and the evidence is there, but we focus on the bad. Therefore, God gets the blame but none of the praise.
We are all taught right from wrong at some point in our lives. There are some that use their free will to choose wrong over right. It is hard to know why the choice is made. We can only speculate. Maybe it was their upbringing or something that happened that made them snap. What I have learned is to never judge someone based on their actions or words alone.
While writing this paper, I found myself questioning my faith. Why does God allow bad things to happen? To a non-believer, I can only say that there are many factors to consider. God’s will is only one of those factors. Consider what the evil is and how did this person commit this act. There were possibly forces out of their control, that caused them to act in such a manner.
I feel we tend to focus on the bad and we actively search for answers. We want someone to blame. It is our human nature to want to point the finger at someone and say it is all your fault. We should have stronger faith in each other, and in God and maybe someday we will get the answers that we
