Why Go Into Music Education

Improved Essays
The decision to go into music education was never really a decision of mine. There was never a definitive moment that I can look back on and say that it was the day I knew what I wanted to major in. This is accredited to the fact that I have been immersed in music for as long as I can remember, whether it be playing the flute, doing numerous musicals, or performing at Carnegie Hall with my chorus. I've always loved working with music, and as I grew older, I wanted to do nothing more than emulate my teachers who became mentors to me throughout the years.
Despite music in all forms being a deep passion of mine, I also am strongly invested in many other aspects of academic programs. I am very involved in politics, and sign up to lead debates

The article The Importance of Music Education written by Alexis Kalivretenos, a trumpet player with a Bachelors Degree in music education from the University of Maryland, is a compelling article that argues the importance of keeping music in the core curriculum of education systems across the nation. Kalivertenos uses a combination of ethos pathos and logos to argue that music should not only be kept in the curriculum but actually benefits the other subjects in the curriculum. Kalivertenos states that music has always taken a back seat to other core subjects such as math and reading. She backs this up with a ten-year study of high school students which states “students in music classes receive higher scores on standardized tests than students with little to no musical involvement.”…

There were so many stories about people who have that one or two songs being a hit, and then that being the end of their careers or those musicians turning into a mess. Also being a person that prefers more privacy and personal space, it seemed like a not so much of a fun career. I decided that I should follow my parents’ advice because they know what is best for me and I’m academically better off than through entertainment. These significant events of learning the experiences I would have gone through both paths and the influences from those around me have made an impact on my ability to determine my destiny. This is to choose to listen to my parents and working hard and do my best in school, to hopefully earn a useful degree.…

My future plans of becoming a speech pathologist can be accredited to my summer trips to inner city Baltimore, Maryland as a mentor and counselor for the Agape House Ministries. Through my encounters with a diverse group of children and an environment that was entirely new to me, I realized that I am passionate about not only these children, but children in general. In my lifetime, I want to impact as many children as possible, particularly by helping them work through speech and cognitive issues as a speech-language pathologist. However, in order to eventually reach this goal, I will first need a college education. Education not only qualifies a person to work in the field of their choice, but it also allows them to see different points of view, and ultimately decide which way of thinking that they will adopt as their own.…

Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

Being involved with the music department isn’t just for music majors or minors. There are many opportunities for the campus community to take part in the benefits of music through lessons, ensembles and performances. For those that enjoy music but do not sing or play an instrument themselves, Luke Carlson, assistant professor of music, said there are a variety of concerts and performances every semester they can attend. “Some of the audience members we get are family members,” Carlson said, “but we also have students, faculty members, and outside visiting people. You never know who's going to come to a concert, so it's just the sort of wonderful experience where we are all sharing music.”…
