The global issue raised in the article “Why Globalization Stalled” is related to reasons behind the recent decrease of globalization and how it can be fixed. Countries are not as interconnected as they used to be and are not primarily concerned with the wellbeing of only themselves. In the years following World War II, many countries showed support for an open trade system and allowed people to migrate across border with ease. However, in recently the idea of free trade and free movement of people has been under attack as the desire for security and privacy has become more prevalent. Even the United States, previously one of the most globalized countries, is becoming more isolated and self-concerned. In an effort to “put America first”, President Trump withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12 nation free-trade deal. In the United States, the United Kingdom, and continental Europe - the countries that helped form and support globalization, it is now more popular to oppose openness and national cooperation than support is and see its positive aspects. A recent poll showed that fewer than half of Americans, Britons, and French saw globalization as a positive force. Even the United Kingdom, which holds one of Europe’s most influential capital markets is about to exit the European Union and drift even further from globalization. As countries like the United States and Great Britain continue lose interest in globalization, China is attempting to replace them and encourage openness and order among countries to maintain a globalized world. Just this year, President XI Jinping confirmed that China is completely devoted to globalization. China has sponsored numerous programs and make several investments to confirm this support. However, with that being said, China will not be able to fund and support this goal if the United States completely withdraws from its leadership status because much of their actions are funded and supported by the United States. While the United States and Europe may not see the issue with bilateral relationships, China sees that this will have a negative effect on the smaller, less economically powerful countries.
