Freedom matters to me for three main reasons: it is the core principle America was established upon, it gives its citizens certain rights, and it provides greater opportunity. During the 16th century, the French Huguenot Pilgrims came to America to be freed from religious oppression that they were experiencing in Leiden, Holland. For example, without the First Amendment, freedom of speech, we would not have the ability to freely criticize the government, which might put people in jail in countries that do not have strong free speech protections. On December 17, 1791 the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms was approved, which was added to remind the government that citizens have the right to own and carry a weapon. These rights and others give Americans the ability to live freely.

They came to America for an opportunity seeking a better life, many were also escaping persecution in their homeland.
