Why Free College Is A Bad Idea Analysis

In this essay, I will first explicate the three arguments given by the author Martin Bozeman in “Top 3 Reasons Why Free College is A Bad Idea.” The author argues that if college was free taxes would go up, college value would decrease, and college costs can be covered by joining the military. After that, I will challenge the arguments and how they need extra evidence to stand out better. Finally, I will explain how the author’s arguments support his conclusion. Martin Bozeman has three premises that support his conclusion. In the first argument, he discussed that tax is high right now. Expenses for people will get worse with another weight burdening the American taxpayers. After graduating, part of the money from the taxes that a student will be paying will go toward the education that the Government once had paid for him. The biggest reason someone would go to college is to get a degree and set themselves apart from others that want the same career as them. The job market is super competitive now, thus it will be difficult for an individual to make themselves more employable. With so many people getting the same degree, there will not be enough room to find employment. Therefore, more people with the same degree means less value one’s degree holds.
In the third argument, he mentioned how joining the military would help someone because the government would pay for college. He thinks if someone really wants an education, they should be willing to do what it takes to get one without receiving someone’s help. Citizens should not be paying taxes for someone they don’t know. Nobody wants their job to be taken from them because of others being more qualified.
