In the article, “GMOs are a Grand Experiment on Health, Environment (op-ed),” the author Katherine Tallmadge, states that GMOs, or Genetically Modified Organisms, are an unknown factor. She is someone well respected in the GMO field to be interviewed about GMOs by CNN, yet her expertise is hardly ever voiced in the article. Tallmadge is a nutritional expert as well as holding a degree in behavioral analysis, she is qualified to discuss the nutritional effects of GMOs in this article. She begins her article by highlighting the risk factors associated with consuming GMOs. Then she discusses what the government’s stance on GMOs are.…
The editorial “With GMO Policies, Europe Turns Against Science” by Mark Lynas, is a perfect example of how authors can use rhetorical devices to sway readers into taking the author’s side of an issue. This is a time when many people are concerned with what is in their foods and how healthy their food is for them. Everyday people are debating if foods with Genetically Modified Organisms are the best decision to feed their families or if they should stay with organic and non-GMO foods. The truth surrogates Lynas uses throughout his article is paired with hyperboles and appeals to pathos which effectively convinces the reader that the European Union’s decision to ban GMO’s is unintelligent and will hinder scientific advancements.…
Ultimately, the film, The World According to Monsanto shows what GMOs are, what the bovine growth hormone is, what Roundup ready soybeans are, and the effects they are all having on the soil, people, and animals. Basically, the whole ecosystem is being effected by Monsanto, who is the forerunner of all of these horrible products. The film does an excellent job explaining what Monsanto is as a corporation, and gets the information to the viewer in a serious…
The author, Matthew Feldmann identifies that there have been recent arguments about the safety of GMOs, or Genetically Modified Organisms. He particularly notes that most debate has come in the areas of crops, specifically rice and soybeans, some of the staple crops of diets worldwide. He uses the rhetorical device of logos, a way of persuading the targeted audience by employing reason or logic, by claiming that although “foods derived from GM crops have been consumed by hundreds of millions of people across the world for more than 15 years,” the public remains mostly uninformed of what GM plants actually are, thereby unknowing of the potential advantages, disadvantages, and range of applications for which they can be used (Key, Ma, Drake).…
GMO’s are foods that have been genetically altered to have the most desirable characteristics. There are individuals who want to these foods to come with labels while others think it is a bad idea. In article one, “Although Some GMO Sympathizers Embrace Mandatory Labeling, It’s A Disaster In Waiting,” by Jon Entine, argues that sticking labels on GMOs will create problems and there no need to for them. Article two, “Even if GMOs are safe, mandatory labeling is a good Idea,” by Mahni Ghorashi, argues that labeling GMOs is a good idea and a human right.…
For years, there has been a serious debate regarding whether genetically modified foods are safe for consumption. Due to this seemingly everlasting controversy came the rise of pro-GMO and anti-GMO groups. To truly understand the severity of the issue, it is important to first understand what exactly a “GMO” is and why it supposedly poses a threat to civilization. A Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is an organism in which “genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially placed into another plant or animal” (Institute for Responsible Technology). Doing so allows for a crop to grow at a higher yield and lower cost.…
To be against genetically modified organisms, is being against the advancement of technology. Over the course of all history many ideas have been shut down before they’ve even seen the light of day, and unfortunately that could be the case for gmo’s. 88% of U.S. scientists say genetically modified foods are safe to eat, and only 37% of Americans agree. Rationally, GMO crops aren't inherently different from other breeding techniques that people already trust—so even though we can't know with 100% certainty that the plants won't have negative effects, there's also no reason to think that they will (Peters). People tend to give them a bad rap simply because they don’t further research them.…
The idea of having a discourse about non-GMOs when the issues of hunger and malnutrition are rampant. Speaks from a voice of privilege and sounds and feels…
So today we’ll first, look under the microscope for what the common consumer may believe is the truth about GMOs, next we’ll splice in the evidence showing what we think we know about GMO’s is wrong and finally look to how we can MODIFY both our perceptions of the scientific…
This shows how integrated they already are into the food chain as well as how vital genetically modified crops are to the agricultural economy; therefore, claiming that GMOs will have detrimental effects on the future is hard to believe when they have already been an integral part in our food business for…
In India, “thousands of sheep buffalo, and goats… died after grazing on Bt cotton plants”(GMO Dangers 1). In North America, farmers have reported that after feeding their pigs GM corn, the pigs had low conception rates, became sterile, or had false pregnancies. After eating GM corn, twelve cows died in Germany. Also, “other cows in the herd developed a mysterious illness and had to be killed” (The Good, Bad and Ugly about GMOs 5). Rats fed Bt corn “showed significant changes in their blood cells, livers, and kidneys”(The Good, Bad and Ugly about GMOs 5).…
Furthermore, increasing the crop yield would be beneficial to society as…
I think globally there needs to be more in-depth education on the difference between a tomato with a longer shelf life, and milk that has harmful chemicals in it. Genetically modified food is not the same thing as food that’s been sprayed with chemicals. Granted, GMOs usually only exist so that herbicides can be sprayed on them and they won’t die, and that is a real source of concern (just because corn is now unaffected by glyphosate it doesn’t mean that people are), but at the very least I think there needs to be more of an in-depth global conversation regarding how GMOs can shape the future if applied correctly. Many people fear GMOs because they do not understand them. My biggest question is, are GMOs part of the problem that is modern agriculture and/or will they be part of the…
Food Inc. is a documentary that given an in depth look at the types of food that we eat every day. The film starts with the mention that there are no seasons in a supermarket because fruits and vegetables are available year round thanks to GMOs. GMOs makes the food grow faster while at the same time keeping pests away. While this may seem fine, fruits and vegetables can lose their rich flavor and color, which then makes them not as delicious. But because GMO grown goods are much cheaper than organic, people end up buying the GMOs.…
Genetically Modified Green Eggs and Ham Technological advancement has tremendously changed the way the average American lives. In effect of this new technology, human population is increasing by the second. In order to meet the needs of all humans, scientists have begun looking to genetic engineering to increase the amount and size of food produced. Crops that have been genetically modified are known as GMOs. GMOs have been a heated subject of debate ever since they were introduced in 1980, and while they do have both positives and negatives, the negatives surely outweigh the positives.…
