Why Endeavour's Mission Saved Hubble

Improved Essays
Engineers eventually proceeded to develop a plan to correct the problem by inserting another mirror in Hubble to produce proportional deformation to the flawed mirror. Those two mirrors, working in conjunction with each other, would convert light transmissions accurately before the telescope's instruments interception of the corresponding image. Accordingly, Space Shuttle astronauts on a subsequent servicing mission planned to install the new optics in extended spacewalks. That plan unfolded when the Space Shuttle Endeavour made repairs to Hubble as part of a planned mission, in December 1993. The astronauts installed corrective optics, a new camera, and several other items. All in all, Endeavour’s mission saved Hubble as well as NASA’s reputation

A spiral galaxy is a certain kind of galaxy originally described by Edwin Hubble in his 1936 work The Realm of the Nebulae and, as such, forms part of the Hubble sequence. Spiral galaxies consist of a flat, rotating disc containing stars, gas and dust, and a central concentration of stars known as the bulge.(Sloan) Spiral galaxies resemble spiraling pinwheels, nearly 77% of space consists of spiral galaxies. Though the stars and other visible material contained in such a galaxy lie mostly on a plane, the majority of mass in spiral galaxies exists in a roughly spherical halo of dark matter that extends beyond the visible component, as demonstrated by the universal rotation curve concept. In the Hubble classification scheme: Spiral galaxies…

Sadly, the astronaut most well known for spacecraft malfunction during the Mercury program, Virgil Grissom, as well as two other astronauts set for the first Apollo launch were caught in the first major tragedy of NASA’s history. On January 27, 1967, the three astronauts were performing a preflight test of their Apollo capsule when their capsule caught fire. In the hours before the fire, the astronauts encountered problems with a sour smell from the oxygen loop of Grissom’s spacesuit, unexplained high oxygen flows which triggered alarms, and worsening faulty communications between the launch pad and the control roomApollo 1. All of these items were identified and discussed before the test continued. The faulty communication even halted the test countdown for almost an hour until just before the fire itself Apollo 1.…

The Columbia Shuttle was the oldest shuttle in the NASA fleet. On January 16, 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle’s 28th mission took place. Eight seconds into the launch a piece of foam insulation broke off from the propellant tank and hit the left wing of the shuttle. The cameras used to capture the launch could not focus accordingly on the shuttle while taking off; crash engineers could not pinpoint exactly where the damage took place. These past few years the US government has drastically lowered the amount of funding NASA receives, hindering what they are able to do. However, recently privately owned companies such as SpaceX and Boeing have begun to design commercial space ships, and have even had major success and break through with those ships. Space is one of the last places, that we’re able to truly explore and find new things that could possibly help us back here on earth. Given this, NASA should receive a higher amount of funding so that it may keep up with the privately owned companies, explore new planets that could be used for colonization, and explore and discover of new and exotic places that we would never think were possible. Many people oppose the position…
