Why Electric Cars Are Bad For The World

Improved Essays
Electric cars have been around for a long time. Even back in the 1960’s the automobile industry was dabbling with electric cars. For the idea of an electric car having been around for at least 50 years now, the fact the world has not totally accepted the electric car as being better for the world show that it must not be better. In fact, electric cars are bad for the world for numerous reasons. These reasons include: electric cars are a waste of time where people are pursuing an idea that is not better, electric cars cause just as much pollution but in other ways, the batteries from electric cars are bad for the environment when the car is no longer in use, the electricity grid capacity in the world can not handle all cars being electric, …show more content…
Gas powered cars give off their own individual exhaust from the gas they use. Electric cars need to be continually charged for the next trip. This requires power plants to generate more electricity which gives off pollution through the smoke pipes or through nuclear waste depending on how the electricity is generated. The smoke pipes are giving off pollution from the use of coal to create the electricity and coal pollution is just as bad as gas exhaust pollution. Also, the creation of electric cars uses more energy than the creation of a gas powered car. The energy used to create a battery for an electric car causes tons of carbon dioxide to be released and this is before the car is even …show more content…
These lithium ion batteries are made in such a way that when they go to the landfill or waste yards they will only cause pollution and damage if they sit around too long and then come into contact with the ground. This may in turn affect ground water in that area. This would be a terrible environmental hazard. Affecting ground water and causing more pollution in this way is not good for the world, so again we should just give up on this idea of creating electric cars. These batteries are much larger than the batteries used in cell phones and watches so having batteries of this size go to waste is really bad for our planet. (Green Transport)
If the world was full of electric cars instead of gas powered, the electricity grid would become overpowered. The world does not have enough infrastructure with electricity to support a world full of electric cars. We would have power outages all the time as there would be a influx of electrical use. Can you imagine when there would be a large event in some city and 50,000 electric cars suddenly show up in that city and there is a huge drain on the cities electric grid. So now the power plants would have to be able to make more energy

According to Henry Lee, the director of the Environment and Natural Resources program at Harvard University, electric vehicles could make roads by 2020 to 2030, but instead for now car-makers should focus on manufacturing increasingly efficient gas-powered vehicles. Walter McManus, an economist and a former market analyst at General Motors, praises the Obama administration’s new fuel efficiency standards, to double fuel efficiency for U.S. cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. “Manufacturers will have to make everything lighter across their fleet… They’ll have to address all of the ways that today’s cars use energy,” he deducts.…

They would go on to make up approximately a third of vehicles on the road in the early 1900s. They quickly faded from roadways however, due to advances in the internal combustion engine. These Electric vehicles would not begin to return to prominence until the 1990s.…

Compared to the late sixties American muscle cars that our grandparents and parents grew up with we are starting to see a consumer trend towards the smaller carbon foot print. While electric cars have been in existent for a couple hundred years now, they have never been as consumer friendly as they are today (Electric Auto Association, 2016). Although electric cars still have limitations there are many more consumers willing to live with those limitations than ever before. Electric car sales are still at less than one percent of auto sales monthly but that number is consistently climbing, even with low gasoline prices. I would certainly own an electric car but the overall cost and limitations of an electric car would greatly impact my life.…
