The Americans treated her family members, such as her father, kindly by listening to them go on and on about how the stereotypes Americans had about Iran were almost always wrong. “We were also asked about electricity, tents, and the Sahara. Once again, we disappointed, admitting that we had electricity, that we did not own a tent, and that the Sahara was on another continent”, (Dumas, pg 90). I choose this quote as a way to show that even when asked obscure questions, the Dumas family would still respond nice to the Americans, and the Americans were being nice by showing they cared about where their new friends had come from.
The Dumas’s relationship to the community in California is shown in the quote by showing how her specific community showed care and kindness to her family. The community her relatives who immigrated here were in, might not have been so kind, depending on the time too. Where you immigrate too and what community is a big deal. The people in their community showed kindness by asking little things in nice voices, such as on page 91 where it says “Another neighbor, a kindly old lady who taught me how to take care of indoor plants, asked whether we had many cats back home” (Dumas, pg
