Why Donor Should Give

Decent Essays
In 2007 Holden Karnofsky and Elie Hassenfield founded GiveWell, an nonprofit “dedicated to finding outstanding giving opportunities” for those looking to donate their money to a cause. Believing that donors should do as much good as possible by maximizing their donations, GiveWell publishes a list of charities they believe will help the most people in the moment. While giving direct aid is generally viewed as a selfless and charitable act, there are differing views on the proper way to give, or if one should give at all. This, therefore, prompts the question of what the best way to give is, or whether donors should give. In order to ensure that the money I donate contributes to the elimination of global poverty, it is important to assess how

He reasons that everyone on the planet does not have an equal entitlement on the resources of others, that we are bound to a greater duty to our family and circle, who have a greater right. By providing for and ensuring happiness to our immediate needs from all others that may claim to our resources, is, in fact, a more efficient means to achieve happiness. Singer counters that although pockets within these first world nations can experience poverty relative to others within their population, these developing nations face absolute poverty, where life is plagued by hardships including death, disease, squalid living conditions and overall despair. Where industrialized nations possess a prosperity and capacity to provide assistance to third world nations, Singer suggests that a donation of one-tenth of their wage would not only lessen the destitution of their fellow man but could be achieved without cost to their own particular well-being and wealth. As this act would maximize the utility or happiness for the greatest number of world citizens and therefore have an ethical obligation to do…

Angus Deaton’s main argument in Response to Effective Altruism is that it is extremely difficult to help the poor people of the world. Deaton also states that foreign aid and other charities are an ethical problem. Arguing against effective altruism, Deaton says that the proof of charity effectiveness is based on technical outfits which are inaccurate. The charity GiveWell is the Consumer Reports for altruists according to Deaton, which means GiveWell creates a minimum cost for saving a child’s life. Deaton states that is an illusion that lives can be bought like cars, since a price tag cannot be put on a life.…

Generosity of Future Me Every day, people talk about their plans to embark on such projects as fundraising for charity or building wells in Africa in the near future when they have the resources to do so. Yet in many cases, these futures never come to pass, and the plans are abandoned. Jon Acuff asserts, in his article “The Generosity of Future Me”, that people should instead focus on giving within their means now. While many argue that delaying giving will ultimately allow them to contribute more, giving now cultivates good habits that will have a direct influence on the future. It has been said that good habits take twenty-one days to build.…

Within William MacAskill book “Doing Good Better”, he argues that we ought to donate to charities that are the most effective in the pursuit to relieve people of suffering. He also asserts that it is not morally justifiable to give to a cause that is close to one’s heart. He proposes this, because the charity we choose to fund may not be as effective and efficient as a different one we could support with the same resources. In choosing not to support the more effective charity would be unfair, because we are favoring the group minority out of subjective reasons. This is demonstrated through the QALY measurement of effective and efficient charities.…

William MacAskill argues in his book “Doing Good Better”, that we ought to donate towards charities that are the most effective. However, he also asserts that it is not morally justifiable to give to a cause that is close to one’s heart, insofar the charity the agent chooses to support is due to a subjective reason. He proposes this, because the charity may not be as effective and efficient as another one we could support with the same resources. Problematically, if we were to listen to MacAskill, there could be counterfactual consequences in adhering to what he proposes. In effect, this essay aims to argue against MacAskill, and assert that it is permissible to donate to a charity that is close to one’s heart.…

Several charities provide gifts to people who donate; for example, organizations hold drawings to reward those who give money. The practice of offering incentives for charitable acts appeals to various organizations because people are more likely to donate if the receive something in return than if they do not obtain compensation. While rewarding people for providing aid to the underprivileged is controversial, incentives are ethical because charities receive more donations than they would if they did not give back. Even though all able people should contribute to helping others, most do not. American society glamorizes an excessive amount of possessions and money, and as a result, people are unlikely to give items away; for example, a substantial…

In today’s materialistic world, we are told that possessions and wealth will bring us meaning when in actuality they only bring temporary satisfaction and leave us craving more. We are so caught up in satisfying our own needs and wants that we rarely take time to look around us at the needs of others. Even when we do see others suffering, many of us are too busy to help or makeup excuses as to why we can’t aid them in their time of need. We look up to celebrities like Paris Hilton and 50 Cent who lead lavish, wasteful, and selfish lifestyles and often aspire to be like them. Many of these stars give little money to charity, and if they do it’s not publicized.…

A majority of the arguments about this subject are associated with whether the government should support the poor or not. A large part of the civil aspects of America relates to charities who have the ultimate goal to eliminate any form of poverty from disease or disabilities. Due to all of this charitable giving, a question lingers asking whether a government should or should not be required to engage in helping people who have fallen into poverty. With people making small donations to the poor that make drastic changes in a family’s or a child’s life, imagine what all a government would be able to achieve. This does, however, strike a problem.…

Organ donation saves lives In 2012, 12,000 Germans needed an organ donation, but only 2,777 donations existed to save lives ("THIS HOUSE WOULD ALLOW DONATIONS OF VITAL ORGANS EVEN AT THE EXPENSE OF THE DONOR 'S LIFE"). Roughly around one-fourth of people who needed a donation received the medical donation they needed to improve their quality of life or even to survive. Three fourths of people did not receive the help they needed due to the lack of donors. While still living or upon death individuals need to consider donating their organs for these reasons and others.…

It is believed that borrowing of money and goods leads to the expectation of repayment and giving back what was given to you. This is quite a contradicting view considering that we often give to the poor willingly, without expecting to be paid back. It is this concern and compassion that has led to the success of organisations such as Caritas, World Vision Australia and Baptist World Aid. Each of these organisations are motivated by Christian principles and values; while working with like-minded individuals and agencies to lift communities from poverty and to build resilience among…
