Every dog needs a collar, but, there are many styles and types of collars out there that it can be overwhelming for a dog owner to sort through and research all of the variety of collars available. This article will explain many of the most common collars available as well as their uses. Please note in this article I am not advocating or discouraging any one type of collar and when choosing a collar it should be based on the owners needs as well as the needs of the dog, taking into consideration the dog's size, disposition, breed, medical history and training need. If you are unsure of the proper collar, ask a dog trainer or a knowledgeable sales clerk for assistance to guide you on the proper collar, how it goes on the dog and how to use it correctly.

A collar is a piece of material put around the neck of a dog for control, identification, or training. Collars are made for both function (i.e.: holding identification, training and/or pest control) and fashion (i.e.: jeweled collar, light up collar and/or studded collar). Though the collar tightens with a tug of the leash, there is a stopping mechanism to prevent complete closure on the neck. These collars are available in a variety of colors and designs. The collars are especially suited for Greyhound or sighthounds, but can be uses on most dog breeds. The collar consists of a length of material with a metal ring at each end. A separate loop of material passes through the two rings. The leash fastens to a ring on this loop. When your dog tries to back out of the collar, the collar tightens around the dog’s neck. If the collar is properly adjusted, it will tighten just to the size of your dog's neck and won't choke
