Why Doesn’t The Ocean Freeze? There is popular belief that the ocean never freezes. The ocean is saltier away from rivers because rivers put freshwater into the ocean. Salt percentages can have either good or bad influences on marine life. Almost anything, including dissolved minerals from the earth’s crust, can be found in seawater. About 97 percent of earth’s water is in the ocean. The most important components of seawater that influence life forms are salinity, temperature, dissolved gases (mostly oxygen and carbon dioxide), nutrients, and pH. Scientists estimate that the ocean holds enough water to fill 352,670,000,000,000,000,000 gallon sized milk containers! Rainfall along the equator’s rainforests create a significantly more diluted ocean than what we once previously envisioned. I believe that the ocean doesn’t freeze …show more content…
Warmer waters are near the equator. The closer you get to the equator, the warmer it becomes. The temperature of seawater varies with the amount of sunlight that hits the area. Below the ocean’s sun-warmed layer there is a much denser and colder layer. It is estimated that 92 percent of the entire sea floor has a temperature lower than 40 degrees F. So even though surface waters can be a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius, the majority of our ocean water has a temperature between 0 – 3 degrees Celsius (32 – 37.5 degrees F. Colder waters are further from the equator. It gets colder the farther away you get from the equator. The average temperature of the oceans is 3.9 degrees C. (39 degrees F.)
