Why Doesn T 4.7 Unemployment Feel Great? By Cather Long

According to CNN (2016) the unemployment rate is 4.9, but should we feel great about this rate or not? Unemployment concerns many people around this world. Finding a job is one of the hardest things that a person could face. It doesn’t matter whether this job is good or not, but it is hard to find one. At the same time, it is hard for a government to create jobs for people. Heather Long(2016) wrote a magazine article”Why doesn't 4.9% unemployment feel great?“ published by CNN, which discussed the current unemployment rate, and if we should feel great about it or not. It also discussed how they calculate the unemployment rate, and what do they include or exclude in it. On the other side Stephen T. Evans wrote a scholarly article “An evaluation of the unemployment rates of the United States” published by Southern Utah University, also discussed the unemployment rate, but it criticized the government and how it should do something to help the middle class or otherwise they will be in a bad situation. His purpose was to prove that the unemployment rate is higher than the official rate. Evans was very successful in his argument. Evans article started with an abstract, which briefly described his argument. His abstract grabs the reader’s attention very well. The language he chooses in the abstract made this attention getter. He used words like “drastically”, “understated”, and he briefly described how the real unemployment rate is at least 25%, which is close to the one of the great depression of the 1930s (pg.157). Then he briefly described how part-time jobs are increasing, and full-time jobs are decreasing. Evans claimed “Also of great concern is that full-time jobs are disappearing and being replaced by part-time jobs” (pg.157).
