Why Does Macbeth Want To Be King

Decent Essays
I don't think Macbeth thought about being king because he was already satisfied with being the thane of Cawdor and Glamis. Those thoughts never occurred until the witches put the idea into his head. And when they told him that he was to be king he didn't even understand why or what reason he was to be crowned. Because he didn't do anything worthy of becoming king. If he did think about being king than that would also mean that he has already had dark desires to plot something against the king, but since it was his wife who came up with the plan, Macbeth never thought about it not until he discussed it with Lady

The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare depicts Macbeth as he is overcome with ambition. Lady Macbeth’s desperate desire for power and control is evident through her vaulting ambition for the throne. The ambition that Lady displays is proven through her quick leap to obtaining more power when a chance for procuring it becomes clear. For instance, as Lady Macbeth reads Macbeth’s letter she responds with saying “Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be/What thou art promised. Yet do I fear thy nature;/It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness/ To catch the nearest way” (1.5.14-17).…

Only motivated by his drive to unseam “the merciless Macdonwald” (I.ii.2) and win honor from his battles for Scotland, the thought of becoming king never enters Macbeth’s mind until he is pushed into believing the possibility may arise. The three witches, in their own amusement, start Macbeth down his path to evil and cruelty. It is Macbeth’s free will, however that keeps him on that path. The witches implant ideas into Macbeth’s head that they know he will act upon. For example, they reveal to Macbeth that he “shalt be king hereafter” (I.iii.6) and that Banquo’s “children shall be kings” (I.iii.7).…

Shakespeare's insight into the theme of the difference between kingship and tyranny is widely explored in the tragic play, Macbeth. The theme exhibits the power of good vs evil through the play and the author interprets the good in King Duncan who shows kingship whereas the evil Macbeth shows tyranny in the kingdom. For instance, “Bring forth men-children only … of his own chamber and used their very daggers. That they have done’t?” (1.7. 80-85)…

In the Shakespeare play, Macbeth, two kings are killed because they are not good kings. There seems to be only a few important characteristics a good king should have to be well-liked by his people and to be good for his people. I believe a good king must be smart and well-informed to what is going on over the land that they rule, loyal to his people as they are to him, and he must not abuse his power and take advantage of the people below him. Duncan was killed by Macbeth because he was unaware of Macbeth's intentions to become king, which made it easy for Macbeth to kill him. A good king should never let his guard down because every king has someone that wants to dethrone him.…

Macbeth has ambitions to become King just as the witches promised: “but only vaulting ambition, which o 'erleaps itself and falls on the other.” However Macbeth does not directly think about the act of treason, he just waives it away. Later on Macbeth is again tempted by Lady Macbeth’s ambition, as shown when he mentions his “black and deep desires (to be king).” Shakespeare presents Macbeth as a greedy but humane character. Macbeth’s use of the adjective “black” shows that he knows that what he is planning to do is wrong.…

Macbeth already had his mind working on how to make the prophecies come true but he stayed hesitant until Lady Macbeth convinced him that it would only be beneficial for the two of them, this only shows how Macbeth’s ambition is weak. Also after killing the king Macbeth started to panic a little in front of his wife instead of staying calm. “but wherefore could not pronounce “Amen”?I had most need of blessing, and “Amen” stuck in my throat”(Act 2, scene 2, 29-31) Guilt took over Macbeth in the beginning of the play but Lady Macbeth calmed him down and asked him not to cower. “These deeds must not be thought after these ways.…

However, the ambition of Macbeth is just as important, if not more important that Macbeth’s own ambition. Lady Macbeth threatens Macbeth, "When you durst do it, then you were a man." Lady Macbeth also states what she would do if you was in his position, using disgusting imagery to demonstrate her commitment saying, I "pluck'd my nipple from his boneless gums/ And dash'd the brains out. " Macbeth is even helped in the murder of Duncan by Lady Macbeth who orchestrates the entire murder.…

Even if the witches had never prophesied Macbeth’s future, his personality and influences would have caused him to attempt to become King. Shortly after the witches first appearance, Macbeth’s ambition can be seen when his ‘black and deep desires’ (Act I, Sc IV, 51) lead him to see Duncan’s son, the heir to the throne, as ‘A step on which [he] must fall down, or else o’erleap, for in [his] way [to the crown] it lies’ (Act I, Sc IV, 48-50). Correspondingly, Lady Macbeth’s impact over, and desire to advance her husband is shown when Macbeth states ‘We will proceed no further in this business’ (Act I, Sc VII, 31) in regards to the murder of Duncan, and Lady Macbeth calls him a ‘coward’ (Act I, Sc VII, 43) and asks ‘Was the hope drunk wherein you dressed yourself’ (Act I, Sc VII, 35-6) to encourage him to go through with the murder. In contrast to Macbeth, after Banquo hears the witches predict ‘Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none’ (Act I, Sc III, 65) he does not act on the prediction by attempting to make his son, Fleance, king. Comparing how Macbeth and Banquo react to the witches’ predictions illustrates to us that Macbeth’s character and influences are part of the reason he acts on the prophecies Although, there is no evidence to suggest that Macbeth had thought about becoming king prior to his…

Macbeth had no intentions of being the king, “The Thane of Cawdor lives a prosperous gentleman, and to be king stands not within the prospect of belief” (Shakespeare 1.2.75-77). He didn’t even believe that he was good enough to be king. The witches are the ones that introduced him to the idea of being king through their prophecies. Lady Macbeth was not mentioned in the play until the witches’ prophecies were introduced. This shows that Lady Macbeth is power hungry as well as Macbeth.…
