Why Does Macbeth Protect His Country

Throughout The Tragedy of Macbeth, Macbeth has gone through many changes. At first, he would do anything to protect his country, little did he know he would be its downfall. Macbeth was praised by his fellow knights, and even the king of Scotland, Duncan. Duncan thought so highly of Macbeth that he gave him the title of Thane of Cawdor. As he gained power, he craved more and more of it. His wife, Lady Macbeth, craved more power as well. They were willing to do anything to gain this power, and more importantly, keep it. They were so blinded by greed, they were willing to kill their own king, the man that started this downhill path towards corruption. Macbeth’s greed for more power led him down a path of corruption. Before the 3 witches told him his prophecy, he would never kill someone for power. His corruption became so great, that just killing Duncan was not satisfactory for him. To secure his kingship, he killed several more people, some that weren’t necessary. He was responsible for the death of Banquo because Macbeth …show more content…
When Macbeth was a knight and Thane of Glamis, he appeared to be content with his life. When he received his prophecy from the witches, he did not completely believe them until he received the title, Thane of Cawdor from King Duncan. Macbeth knew he was becoming close to being crowned king of Scotland and the temptation was too intense for him to wait. Even after he killed Duncan and became King, he was still not content and greed overcame him. He transformed from a noble knight to a tyrannous leader willing to kill anyone who stood in his way. The power of greed imposed onto Macbeth blinded his thoughts and made him forget his past and all morals. His greed to stay king blinded him to the point that the death of his wife did not even phase him. Upon hearing the horrendous news, he said, "She should have died hereafter"
