Why Do Zoos Use Captive Animals

Decent Essays
When you go to a zoo have you ever thought of how the animals got there? Some people may think that zoos are helping society, although zoo authorities have said that, they could really be hiding animal abuse. Animals should not be put in that situation. Zoos take wild animals and put them into artificial settings, visitors tend to abuse animals and their habitats by littering, and captive animals do not exhibit their natural behavior traits in a zoo. Wild animals are connected to their natural living. When you put a wild animal in to an artificial habitat like a zoo it might end up struggling with anxiety and depression. These animals don't deserve to be taken away from their family and most of these captive animals live in a pack or a herd and can't live without each other. Although some places take animals in because they have been hurt or injured, …show more content…
Garbage, soda cans and hair ties are all things that animals get stuck in. When you or other people throw things into their cages, it's pretty similar to how the workers feed them. Animals can mistake it for food and can get hurt or worst die. None of this would happen in the wild because animals live in an environment safe for them, and where they don't have millions of visitors every day. All of this leads up to many deaths of captive animals and the business is still going on. All in all animals aren't themselves in captivity and the artificial habitats of the zoo. The other side of the argument states that zoos are meant to learn more about an animal's traits and natural living. Most zoos even have a sign that tells you facts about the animals in that area. Captive animals do not exhibit their natural behavioral traits in zoos, therefore, studying a zoo animal won't reveal much of its natural living style. To sum it all up, are zoos really doing what they say? Or is that ust a cover up so this business keeps

Animals are treated unethically in zoos around the world, especially when it comes to captive breeding programs that ultimately do not help with reintroduction into the wild. Zoos may claim that their methods are ethical and are beneficial to the environment and the species in question, but their practices end up hurting the animal in the long run. These problems in the system lead to the suffering of many animals in the pursuit of the perfect animal to release. Not only created for entertainment as they claim, zoos have been breeding animals and sending them back into the wild to die. Maybe one day, the typical scene at a zoo will be a tour showing animals in a wildlife preserve- safe, happy, and…

The question of the impact of captivity on animals remains one of the most challenging and controversial over the several decades. Some people disagree that zoos are an important part of animals conservation as they believe sanctuaries in animal's native habitat would bring more positive results as animals suffer from the constant human presence and lack of space. Others argue that zoos provide animals with even better conditions than in the wild and that without zoos many conservation programs would not exist so that for endangered species it is better to live in captivity than become extinct. Both opinions can exist as there are many zoos in the world and their facilities contrast greatly. It is obvious that ill-designed zoos does not serve…

Though, I know the establishment of zoos gave people the opportunity to see and learn about different animals from around the world, they play a role in animal conservation and education. It is a way of preserving species of animals that may become extinct in the future. What we do not realize is by keeping these animals in confinement, it is an act of cruelty and we do not know what takes place behind the scenes of the shows and displays of these animals. Studies have indicated that confined animals living with uncommon social groups, different climates, and unsuitable diets, unlike animals living in the wild, can lead to animals suffering from psychological and physical problems such as zoochosis. Zoochosis is a kind of behavior common in…

Stepping inside a zoo is like setting foot in the wild; with the only difference that the animals are enclosed behind bars and some are within a distance for public safety. Zoo animals, who are held in captivity, are restrained from having the freedom they were evolved to take advantage from because they are preserved for public education and amusement. What may seem like a friendly establishment for wild animals is in reality a park where animals: are used for “educational” purposes, are deprived from having an adequate environment where they can act like animals, suffer from stereotypical behaviors where their behaviors alternate, and are considered to be money makers rather than animals who are being preserved. When humans enjoy visitations…

In these zoos, animals are treated cruelly and are killed for no reason, animals go through mental/psychological disorders, and lack the nutritious values that are only given to them in the wild. These reasons prove that zoos need to be shut down and these helpless animals deserve to live and thrive in the environment and habitat they come from. It is disturbing to think of how positive zoos are seen and how they are a popular attraction for people of all ages. Next time people go to a zoo, they should look closely at these animals and see the misery and depression in their…

Should animals really have a Bill of Rights? Animals should not have a Bill of Rights because they should be kept preserved, helps humans’ sustain life, and hunted to keep animal population on the rise. I think that zoos should not be allowed because they need the freedom to roam around without boundaries of zoo walls. Animals in captivity may live longer, but they have the lack of the quality of life, don't get their natural instincts to hunt, and may not have the right care that they need to be able to live a happy and healthy life. The animals in captivity may live longer, but live an unhappy life due to lack of freedom due to zoo walls and other animals. According to Petakids.com “In the wild, elephants walk up to 30 miles each day, bears are active for up to 18 hours a day exploring their home ranges for up to hundreds of miles, and tigers and lions love running and climbing and will roam many miles to hunt.” This being said animals…

There are some differences in zoos and circus’ for example; in the circus industry, elephants are chained up for, “12-23 hours per day when not performing”(Lossa, 134), but rarely ever are they chained up in zoos. Everyone has different opinions on zoos and circus’ about whether they agree with them or not, but there are many reasons to why people shouldn’t agree with the industry. Elephants, tigers, bears, monkeys, etc. are all caught in captivity for their life. They are then thrown into cages with chains, and forced to learn new techniques to perform. Most animals suffer from behavior changes, and are unable to live life the same because of the environmental…

This is all wonderful, but there are many downfalls to zoos as well. A few of those such downfalls are lack of natural living, increased stereotypes, and increased stress. A lack of natural living refers to both the environment and the animal’s behavior. A zoos enclosure may come close to many of the animal’s natural habitat but they are not exactly the same as the animal’s natural habitat (animalsupport.org). Also an animal’s natural behavior will be affected by being in a cage (greengarageblog.com).…
