Why Do You Think Kids Should Get Money For Doing Chores

Decent Essays
don’t think kids should get money for doing chores. You may ask, why I say that I will tell you in the next paragraph. Chores are responsibilities and you should do without money. However, some kids get money for nothing.

Kids shouldn’t get money for doing chores because that should be a thing that needs to be done all the time. For example, when I clean up around the house I don’t get anything because that should be a day to day thing for you. My parents always tell me to clean up my room and I don’t get anything because they want me to learn about it. If you have kids and they clean up their room and do it well, you shouldn’t reward them because they should do it anyway.

I used to get rewarded for cleaning up my room when I was little.

According to this reasoning they also deserve to be rewarded. It would seem to me that that reasoning has some very big flaws in it. The other argument is that they work very hard every day and physically push themselves. This reasoning really bothers me because it is the reasoning of lazy people who think that it is such a rare thing for someone to work hard. Anybody can work hard and push themselves.…

No. The reason for this is because you know giving them something so easily is bad for them. They will not truly appreciate nor would they care for it as well as they would have if you made them earn it. No try to imagine you demanding that child to do it. Like chores or an errand.…

Many people work hard for the good of themselves, the rewards and maybe just do it because they want to. I could mow the lawn, do the laundry, clean my bedroom all without even a break for payment or just because I was just told to do so. Whatever! Doing stuff can be hard working because maybe you might feel tired after you are woken up to do your work, or maybe you are just lazy. But besides all of that.…

Gardiner explains that rewarding the child only motivated the child to reach the reward as quick as possible. Supporting this claim Gardiner also states, “While there may be an initial increase in desired behavior, in most cases, these attempts to buy performance won’t last long. Eventually they may do serious damage to students’ intrinsic motivation” (Gardiner, 1). This statement just further stresses the fact that in the future children will only work hard to receive rewards, but once those rewards are not present the child will stop their hard work. This issue occurs most often in school when teaching a child.…

Rewards can help parents teach their children new habits. Kids can be taught new habits without getting a reward. Kids don’t need a reward for everything that they do. Many individuals would disagree or agree that children should not have to do chores. Jane Smiley wrote in her article, “The Case Against Chores,” that the pressure to put your children to work is unrelenting (Smiley 274). If children do not do anything for themselves or others, children are not going to know how to be self-sufficient in the future. A child who does not do any chores are going to grow up to become spoiled individuals. There are many quotes from Smiley throughout “The Case Against Chores” that would make people think about the kind of children Smiley wants to raise or perhaps even the children an individual reading “The Case Against Chores” wants to raise.…

I agree with the author. Schools and parents should help students to understand that they have to work hard to deserve getting rewards. Giving children regular reward is not motivating them because children will understand that they do not have to work hard anymore. Ashely Merryman said that children will not worry about improving themselves anymore because they know that their schools will naturally give them all rewards. That is true.…

Psychologist Sam Goldstein claims, “ External motivators may be effective and well intended, but they clearly work against the continued development of a child’s intrinsic motivation.” This stated that by giving outside factors as motivation, people are harming the student’s natural motivation. This would lead to them not having their own desire to learn. Students would start to lose their innate motivation for short, external motivation. Giving students money as motivation has a negative effect and can take something natural from them.…
