This is mentality of most people I know. We work for ourselves, we seek pleasure, we avoid pain, we try to take care of our family, sometimes our friends and it stops there. The barista at Starbucks would be lucky to see us crack a smile and would be bewildered if we genuinely ask her if she is having a good day and we actually listen to her response.

If you have the mind of a "non-murderer" you cannot choose to become one. Even if a life event happened to you right now that will drive you to kill, if you actually did it you would have had no choice but to do it. Something pushed you far enough psychologically that you took action on it. You can 't choose the person that will be in front of you in traffic, or the thought that you are about to think, or the words I am about to write. Even you "choosing" the reaction that you will have is because in the past someone made you aware that you had this "ability" to gauge different consequences and choose the one that will cause you the least amount of pain and has the potential for most amount of pleasure.
