Why do you want to become a Social Worker? At first when people ask me that question my first instinct is to say “ because I want to help people.” Well that’s pretty obvious right? If I didn’t want to help people then why am I becoming a Social Worker? To answer the question why do I want to become social worker I have to look at it in a different way. I ask myself why do people need help and why do I want to help them? I usually ask myself these questions a lot when I am going through my Social Work classes and reading about the difficulties that Social Workers face. I also ask myself these questions when I talk to various social workers and they tell me not to do it. I wonder to myself why they would tell me not to do it. I then begin to …show more content…
I see the small changes that my mother and I have made in their lives and I remember that this is the reason why I am doing it. This is why I am becoming a social worker. As I drive down the road and I see the many homeless people standing on the corner I tell myself this is the reason why I am becoming a social worker. As I see the line of people at the food bank I tell myself this is why I am becoming a social worker. When I see the various stories on the news about children being abandoned, abused or neglected and I think of what is going through their mind I have the overwhelming feeling of wanting to help them I know that am on the right path of becoming a social worker. As I sit with the elderly hospice patients at a local senior care facility and I hear them tell me that the hardest things is not being able to help themselves anymore I know that I am doing the right thing by becoming a Social …show more content…
When it comes to the primary mission of promoting well-being and helping meet the basic human rights of all people I realized that this is what I have wanted to do all along. I know that all people regardless of background, ethnicity, age, race, gender, or sexual orientation have the right at living a healthy life. In order for all to live a healthy life there has to be a catalyst helping them along the way. This is the job of a Social Worker. They are the catalyst to promoting social justice and human well being. But I also recognize that the person being helped has to be willing to embrace change. Another part of the mission statement that my goals align to is the part about the well-being of society. I recognize that helping the individual is the start of promoting human well-being, but the well-being of society in a whole needs to change or the changes in the individual human may become null and void. The one part of the mission statement that my goals of becoming a Social Worker are slightly different is that of the activities of a Social Worker. Although I know that as a Social Worker I may be called on to perform many different tasks such as direct interaction with clients to helping with policy change in the past when I have thought about myself as a Social Worker I saw
