Multicultural Center

“It’s my belief that many parents send their son or daughter to Penn State because of our Paul Robeson cultural center.” Says William Asbury, Penn State’s Vice President for student affairs. ”I don’t think there’s any question that it helps in retention.” This was from an article “Black Issues in Higher Education” (Hefner) I agree with Asbury: the University Of Montana Western could truly benefit from having a multicultural center on its campus. Why do I believe the University Of Montana Western would benefit from having a multicultural center? As I walk around campus I can see a somewhat diverse group of students with my different cultural backgrounds. I know for a fact there are a handful of Native Americans going to …show more content…
Having a multicultural center on campus would be a huge attention grabber, when students from all over the country look at the University Of Montana Western. They will say now there’s a school, I can attend and be comfortable in my own skin, that’s the college for me. Seeing that a college cares so much about the diverse community of students, that they took the time and money to build a cultural center says they will do just about anything to make the experience at UMW a great …show more content…
I have also talked to other students in my class about what they thought of having a multicultural center; they all said it would be neat to have one. A center that would be open to all that wanted to learn about different cultures, and why we do some of the things we do. I too would love to learn about different cultures from the people themselves. I sent an email to Nicole Hazelbaker asking her what her thoughts were on UMW ever having a Multicultural center on Campus. This was her reply “I think it would be great for our students. It would be a good place for our students to learn about and to share with others their culture. Anything we can do to meet the needs of our students is always a positive move for our campus but most importantly our students. The bonus would be a benefit for our community as well.” I thought that was so amazing, what she thought of the idea of having a multicultural center having such an important person on campus think the same way you do about the issue and that she cares so much about the students that goes to UMW, makes me feel so good about being a Native American going to school at the UMW. That they also care enough to make changes around campus, to make life here great for everyone who attends and those who wish to enroll here in the future it would increase number of recruits and a much higher retention rate overall for the student body

I also would love to also bring diversity to the University and Orange Keys not only because I am a minority, but also my history of living in a household that made no more than $30,000 annually, as well as one bringing in more than $100,000 annually helps me understand both sides of the coin. Last but not least, I would also take pride in bringing hard work and service to both the University and the Orange Keys. I have learned how to work hard when playing sports, and working two jobs to help my mom with cancer, as well as putting…

In the midst of heavy racial tension among college campuses across the country, Cal Poly Pomona has stood out above the rest by being culturally sensitive and encouraging students to take initiative and learn about other customs and ethnicities outside of their own. Over the course of the last academic session for students, whether quarter or semester there have been reported protests regarding racial injustice on at least five college campuses across the country. There have been zero protests at Cal Poly and according to President Coley it is because of it’s “long standing inclusive values and diverse campus.” She does not believe the campus has to handle damage control like other universities to recent events because it is in Cal Poly’s DNA starting with faculty and staff to be culturally aware and sensitive.…

Growing up in Skokie, Illinois and going to arguably one of the most diverse high schools in the nation, Niles West, I have grown up with people of all different backgrounds and cultures. I was not even aware of our school’s diversity until I visited my cousin’s graduation ceremony in Geneva, Illinois. According to illinois-demographics.com, Geneva has a 90.9% white population. In contrast to this, Skokie has a 65.6% white population. He seemed to be the only Asian-American that I saw that day, and really stuck out.…

Diversity is a concept that can prove beneficial, especially in a college setting. However, the full effects of it cannot be discerned until people have an accurate grasp for what diversity truly entails. As a part of a high ranked research institution and leading college in the nation, you have the responsibility to not only make the true nature of diversity known to your student body but to also utilize its many elements as a basis for your admission process. Again, by using race-based affirmative action, you will not achieve…

My high school is made up students with many different backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions, so I have never felt out of place. When I asked my third question, which is “How has the University of Washington presented you a different view of culture and diversity?” Kelly answered, “…coming from places like Fresno where the economy is based solely around farmers who are really conservative people, and then Palos Verdes where everybody is really rich, everyone I’ve been from such a conservative environment my entire life… my mom is liberal and my father is conservative… coming here has liberalize me more so… being here I’ve become more comfortable with the homeless community… where in Fresno is not really common to see one… definitely also a larger Asian culture that I’ve ever seen… I’ve also become more open… I went to the black lives matter forum… I have a broader view of white privilege, there are more movement here... there are more people open to educating themselves about others…” It gives her a new perspective about how racism still in existence, there are more culture to explore and understand, and that white privilege does exist. The same reasons that HBCUs were founded should be the same reasons why black students attend them. In addition to the safe haven that is created by the HBCU atmosphere, the student culture along with various organizations offer plenty of immersion into attending an HBCU. You will not only excel academically, but one’s learning and advancement will benefit them as people. Community service is also a huge part of the HBCU experience.…

By incorporating a diversity program on campus, it will afford an opportunity for students to work together with teachers, administrators and other community members in order to build supportive educational community. A diversity program will allow the minority populations such as ESL, SPED and others on campus to share their experiences in order to build a community that understands that we are all more alike than different. By partnering with parents and members of the community, I think a program could be developed that allows every culture the opportunity to…
