“Of all the foods consumed today, refined sugar is considered to be one of the most harmful”, says macrobiotics.com. Most people are somewhat aware of how much soda they drink or how many calories they intake, but they have never thought about much sugar they eat. The average American eats approximately 130 pounds of sugar per year. While some don’t even realize that eating too much sugar is something that they daily partake in, it is a terrible habit that needs to be broken!

It isn’t actually necessary for a person to have any added sugars in their diet, such as the sugar from cakes, cookies, and ketchup. According to the American Heart Association, women should only have 6 or less teaspoons of sugar per day and men should have 9 or less teaspoons per day, yet the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar per day. Therefore, Americans are consuming significantly more sugar than they should be.

Sugar suppresses the immune system, and having a weakened immune system means that they are more likely to get sick. Plus, according to Intoxicated on Life’s article “The Top Ten Reasons to Give Up Sugar”, “Sugar leeches minerals from your body and makes you over-fat.” By robbing your body of minerals, sugar is causing Americans to become sick and fat! Not only is eating too much sugar suppressing their immune systems and making them fat, it is rotting their teeth, causing sugar diabetes, depression, and causing kidney problems. To put the amount of sugar a person eats into perspective, a regular 12oz can of soda contains 10 teaspoons (40 grams) of sugar, which is 1-4 teaspoons more than their daily sugar intake should
