Why do we dream and what are types of dreams?
The average amount of sleep one receives per night is between six to seven hours. Within those few hours, those normally experience dreams (Life Noggin). Dreams seem like a simple process. Nearly everyone experiences dreams each night but most dreams seem meaningless or full of nonsense. While looking closer at what some researchers have discovered, it is shown that dreams can hold deeper meanings, problems can be solved, and emotions can be set free during dreams. These messages are often hidden in the symbolic language of dreams. This language is not something you can learn, such as Spanish or French. It is used to send those messages from the subconscious. There are three theories that are the more predominant than the others. Theory one - dreams create wisdom. Dreams are a filter of our brains sorting out information we don’t need to remember. Dreams are said to help our mind ease in order to filter out information that may not be needed anymore so new information can be stored much easier. A more commonly known theory is the evolutionary theory. The evolutionary theory is that we dream so we can practice our responses to threatening situations. They help relieve stress and anxiety through problem solving during the dreams. An example would be if a person is focusing a lot on a problem, it might show up in a dream. This process provides a safe place to address the problem and create possible solutions to solve said problems. The person will then wake up with the information gained in the dream in the subconscious mind. This theory helps us understand why we have nightmares. This also makes our own personal nightmares easier to understand. Nightmares, and dreams in general, can seem extremely realistic which leads us to respond in realistic ways ("Why Do We Dream?"). Lucid dreams are dreams that one is aware are dreams and not reality. As a result of lucid dreaming, one becomes able to take control of the said dream ("Lucid Dreaming: Awake in Your Sleep."). Lucid dreams are places where we can chase fantasies. It’s also like a secret testing ground for honing skills and even facing fears. We can use lucid dreaming as a tool for self exploration. Lucid dreaming is a fantastic way to open the mind to the unknown, and explore things that are unexplainable. Also, it’s a great way to remain in touch with one’s subconscious, and gain a better understanding of oneself (Tuccilo).
