According to the Seidman (1972) book review, portions of the American labor movement has been plagued with corruption since the turn of the century. Research discovered that union representatives were wrongfully spending funds, acquired from union member dues and fees (Seidman, 1972). Union representatives were also looting funds from the treasury department as well as stealing funds from employers who paid strike insurance dues. (Seidman, 1972). Furthermore, Union Representatives in a corrupt system would accept bribes in exchange for “failing to prosecute vigorously the interest in collective bargaining” (Seidman,1972, p277). The book review also explained that corruption in unions are caused by various levels of representation.
