There are many books out there that talk about adolescents and why they may act the way that they do. “Why do they act that way?” by Dr. David Walsh, doesn’t just lay out all of the facts like some other books might. Dr. Walsh takes the information that he has collected and connected that to the experiences that he has from being a father to adolescents, being a teacher, and being a school psychologist. It is by adding this personal element to the information that makes it so connectable to other parents and even to teachers so that they can apply what they have learned to their own adolescents. “Why do they act that way?” is a great book for people who are interacting with adolescents for the first time because, the information and examples …show more content…
It was realized that they act the way that they do because that is what their brain is telling them to, and if what is being done isn’t a good thing, that is because the part of their brain that tells them what is good and not good is undergoing major transformation. Now it is known that when an adolescent is tired in a class it is because they aren’t getting enough sleep, but also that it isn’t completely their fault for not getting enough sleep. Taking all of this information and transforming it into a classroom will take some time, but once all of the issues that may arise are taken care of it would create a better classroom for an adolescent. Some things that would be done are, only allowing healthy drinks in the classroom such as: water, milk, and juice. If it is noticed that may students are dozing off, have them get up and move around to get the blood flowing again. When it comes to someone acting out, don’t call them out on it in front of the whole class, but go to them during in class work time and talk it out with them to see if they know what they did was wrong or not. There are so many different things that a teacher could do to make their classroom more adolescent friendly and it is just going to take time for them to find the right things for them.
