Tattoos and why they should not be considered deviant
Humans have marked their bodies with tattoos for thousands of years. These permanent designs, sometimes plain, sometimes elaborate, always personal markings have served as amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments and even forms of punishment. Prior to my research I had no idea where the tattoo even originated from? Which is ironic because neither does anyone else. The history of the tattoos are very hard to trace. But I managed to find “the iceman”. This was a man that lived 5,300 years ago and was discovered in 1991 preserved in ice. Otzi had 57 tattoos, after a proper examination of his body specialist can assume that his tattoos were a form of treatment or acupuncture. But I do admit we live in a changing world. The norm is evolving at a rapid pace. Americans have pushed the envelope when it comes to what’s socially acceptable. Things that were looked down upon such as gay marriage, women’s rights and other touchy topics have changed. A professional 15 years ago might lose their job or lose business for having visible tattoos, but in today’s world it might be the exact opposite. The world didn’t always give the green light to someone covered in permanent graffiti. In an Article titled “Tattoo Psychology: Art or Self Destruction? Modern-Day Social Branding the author states that tattoos alone are a conversation starter. Many people that meet others with tattoos automatically categories them. Some of the quick assumptions make about tattoos according to Reef Karim are “He must be tough”, “She’s probably easy”, or “She just wants to drink vodka tonics and dance on a speaker”.
