There is a difference between leading someone to behave better and manipulating them to act as you want. Trust is important in an environment as you need to be honest get people to trust you. Honor codes need a trusting environment, without trust students will feel as if they forced to act in the image the staff desires. This creates a divide between students and teachers, in which teachers doubt students and students will feel that there is no need to obey the honor code as following them will still make teacher doubt their honesty. It’s not right that professors always have “a few people that they like to investigate,”(D) if you start off with expectations of having a student cheat then you're not setting up trust or any expectations of them being honest. If the staff would rely on students rather than suspect them, students would actually respect academic integrity.
