Why Do Students Get Paid For Classes

Last semester I paid around five hundred dollars for five books from our on-campus bookstore. This number may seem large; however, I know of people that paid even more than I did. Full-time students are already paying a tremendous amount of money to attend college so why should they have to spend so much money on buying books that are a necessity for classes? What I am getting at is that books from our bookstore are overpriced. In the Rebel Yell article by Ian Whitaker, “In the face of high prices, students skipping out on textbooks”, he expresses how students are willing to risk their grades and not buy textbooks because of their high prices. Many books are sold or rented out online to students or at Beat the Bookstore, a store just across the street from here. There are even books that are sold in a pdf form that allow highlighting, notes, and a searching tool that allows one to look up certain parts of readings. These books online could be up to fifty dollars cheaper than those in the bookstore. Beat the Bookstore also has books that are much cheaper than the books in our bookstore. The only issue is that they run out of books extremely fast and their store is very crowded in the beginning of the semester. However, you could send in your order before the semester starts and they will have your books waiting for you as soon as they open. The online books can be new or used and they also contain access codes that will be needed for many classes. This can save college students a great deal of money and would take less stress off of their shoulders. On the other hand, our school could help out even more by placing some books in the library to be checked out. This would be even better and easier to many students who really cannot afford
