Why Do Students Dress Code

Improved Essays
There are many schools in the U.S. that require students to dress a certain way or follow a set of rules in order to set boundaries for students and what they wear, this is better known as a school dress code, which is one thing many students feel a strong hate for. This year at my school every Tuesday and Thursday students are required to dress business professional, which I think is a bit extreme and stupid for many reasons. For the girls dress code the rules include wearing either a skirt or slacks, and a modern blouse; As for the boys, they're asked to either wear slacks or jeans with a button up shirt. With these new rules set in the dress code many students were very upset, including myself. The reason for these changes? Students needed …show more content…
One of the biggest concerns I have about the dress code is that most of the students who are being dress coded, even on regular dress days happen to be girls. This is upsetting because many of the young girls being dress coded look perfectly fine, but are being punished because their outfit is viewed as a clothing item that could be “provocative”. I think what our school staff members should’ve done was teach students how to dress, instead of just saying “make sure to dress up professionally” because most students at my school don’t even know how to properly tie their tie, how long their skirts needed to be, or even what slacks were. Getting mad at students for how their dressing when the dress code wasn’t even fully explained is just mediocre. If teachers and staff members really cared for the dress code because of the “impression” it would make, they would’ve made more of an effort into finding a smart approach to address how they wanted their school and students to be presented. In conclusion, I don’t agree with school dress codes because many of them take away freedom of expression from students, demonstrate gender inequality, and overall, students are still uneducated on how to dress for the real

Dress codes standards send home students every day, all over the country, for being too revealing. Most are girls, and on occasions, boys that struggle with the standards, therefore they should be lowered. It’s taking away from your class time, limits self-expression, and the rules can sometimes not be correctly administered are all problems caused by dress codes standards. The dress code can take away from class time because everyone is more concerned with how we are dressed, rather than worrying about if we’ll do good on our next math test, or studying for the history final. During class, teachers can stop their lesson to tell one of their students that they are violating dress codes, therefore taking time away from class and from other students learning for something that is not relevant outside of school.…

It is reasonable to consider this because it teaches boys to be civil and to respect others of the opposite gender. Instead of the having the dress code, “teach female students that their bodies are a problem… they should really be teaching acceptance and body positivity, and also human rights” (Wente). If in place of school dress codes students were taught human and civil rights it would benefit the youth and have them be more socially aware. While this solution may teach the youth of more issues, it is not guaranteed to work because not everyone will listen or learn. Even after kids have gone to a lesson, this will not stop rape or the culture that is created because of the dress code.…

Ever since we started school we’ve had to deal with dress code. However, schools have different rules such as whether you have to wear uniforms or how short your skirts can be. My elementary school required us to wear uniforms and as the years went on the dress code got progressively stricter. When I moved on to high school it wasn’t much better. They would constantly send people to the office to get a change of clothes, but by doing this they also removed students from their classes, making them fall behind.…

Overall, the school dress code is biased towards females, it sexualizes the female body and humiliates the female students. The rules harass females, blaming them for showing skin, distracting male students with their bodies, and taking away any rights they have by directing the rules at them. Females should no longer be treated this way, and the school dress code needs to stop being sexist, discriminating and directed at females when they do nothing…

According to the Gale Cengage Opposing Viewpoints In Context, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reported that 20 percent of American public schools required students to wear a uniform in 2014, and also in 2014 nearly 60 percent of American public schools had strict dress codes; however my dress code allows students freedom while also adhering to safety, distraction, and decency policies. For example, I’m sure that most of us have sat behind someone who never stops playing…

The idea of school dress codes being sexist and encouraging rape culture has become very popular across school districts. There are stories about protests and strikes all around the country. I have witnessed these “dress code violations” and from what I witnessed, none of these girls were in the wrong. There have been too many times that young ladies get dress coded because what they are wearing is a “distraction” to young men. These boys need to be taught self control and I should not get punished because I was dressing comfortably for the weather.…

We all know that group of girls who show up to school with their breast popping out of their shirts, butts hanging out of their shorts, and belly shirts that show way too much skin. Obviously, dressing like this to school is in no way appropriate, and should be addressed. Another argument of why the dress code should be enforced is the fact that school is a learning environment and that we should be teaching kids how to dress for the future. By doing this, you are helping young adults understand that wearing a crop top or (for boys) wearing saggy pants to an interview definitely won’t get you a job. Others may say that enforcing the dress code, like providing school uniforms, will help families that are in poverty and will decrease bullying when it comes to making fun of someone’s…

If the situation is getting out of hand such as when the Albemarle County, Va passed rules towards a new dress code when lawsuits were filed and eventually taken to court where the judge said,”’the dress code is too broad-- and may be unconstitutional’”(Robson para. 6). With a school under these lawsuits and feeling as though their students are wearing inappropriate clothing; the easiest way to handle the situation is to enforce a school uniform. This way all genders are treated equally, the reasoning behind the rules are set in a reasonable manner, and the dress code is easy for everyone to follow. All schools that don't require a certain uniform including Jackson High School should adjust their dress code with the ideas of: the difficulty to follow the dress code, the reasoning behind the dress code, and the inequality of gender treatment. These changes in all schools alike would make the environment so much better for teenage girls constantly on the search for clothes that are, cute, appropriate, and fit their size.…

Dress codes should be banned from schools because they teach students that the way they dress is more important than their education, students can miss important lessons in class because they have to change or go home, and it's not a student's fault if another student cannot concentrate because of what they're wearing. In most schools, they have unnecessary dress codes and punishments for breaking them. In the article Girls getting fed up with school dress codes that treat them as distractions by Maureen Downey, it says that a girl was suspended for having blue hair because it was too “distracting”. This shows that dress codes can be unfair because it’s not the student’s fault if another student looks or becomes distracted by them.…
