Why Do Students Cheat

Decent Essays
Cheating has many advantages and disadvantages. People cheat for a multitude of reasons. Adults cheat to get a higher position at work. Children cheat to pass tests or quizzes that they did not study for. In the end cheating results in an easy win for a short period of time turning into future consequences. Adults tell their children cheating is bad. Yet, when it comes to their job nobody wants to get left behind. Nobody wants to get looked over for a job opportunity because trying your best was not good enough. Students cheat in school all the time. This is wrong. The students that cheat are only cheating themselves out of an education. The students that are working hard to get good grades are the ones being

True citizens must go beyond the "right" expectations of a society by sometimes doing the wrong expectations in order to have the right outcome. Cheating is a wrong expectation in a society, and even though a society thinks cheating is never the right answer, there are a few cases where it may be a good thing. From the article, "What do school teachers and sip wrestlers have in common", by author Steven J. Dubner, he explains how cheating is a part of every citizens life, and how it may not always be a bad thing in a society because it is naturally a part of many people's lives and there may be some cases where cheating can be used as a slight benefit for some people. "It is the third grader who, worried about not making it to the fourth grade, copies test answers from the kid sitting next to him" (Steven J. Dubner 1). This example of how cheating may be a benefit might not be clear for some people because most people probably view cheating on a test, (whether it's just to pass a grade or not), as a meaningless act because the person who is cheating is not using the mind of there own.…

That means that for every two students, one will be three times more likely to inflate an insurance claim and one and a half times more likely to cheat on their spouse in the future according to an infographic created by Loreal Lynch on Schools.com. In the article, “How Will Cheating in School Affect the Rest of Your Life,” Christopher Cascio claims that students cheat because they don’t understand the material taught, or because of the simple fact that their peers do it. Cascio explains his thoughts when he says “you might begin to question why you put forth full effort while others simply cheat and achieve the same academic accomplishments, and so you might begin to cheat as well”. What these students who cheat don’t know, is that cheating is detrimental in the long run because the things you learn in school will help you in the future, and if you cheat while learning those topics you will never be able to fully understand them or apply…

There is so much pressure put on students today to get good grades in high school in order to get into a good college. Many students feel the need to cheat. I read an article titled “Too Much Pressure” by Colleen Wenke, published in the 1998 edition of Fresh Ink, a collection of work by Boston College’s first-year writing course students. Wenke feels we are creating a society where many students think that cheating is acceptable because everybody does it. In the article, she writes that cheaters today aren’t the people you would normally expect.…

There has been cheating in schools, workplace and in the government system since the early times. Today students cheat occasionally to try and get ahead on their work, to just get the work done, and to get an unfair advantage on test and quizzes. Today’s culture sees that cheating is not a big deal and decide to do it. IN Mari Pearlman’s article I agree with what she stated. Cheating is everywhere and today’s children see that at their households because of their parents.…

There are numerous reasons why students cheat. In the article Instructing Students in Academic Integrity, according to the authors, “ Cheating tends to be justified when students feel that the material that they are learning is not relevant to educational and personal goals”( Craig, Federici, and Buehler 50). When students don’t feel like an assignment is necessary, then they will simply ask to copy another student's work just to get it done and get the assignment points. This is a very popular trend, especially in a course that doesn’t matter or interests the student. When asking people around campus, the cut throat environment of college and getting into graduate school is the main reason students…

We find a lot of people who cheat to get ahead in their lives, but according to the teachings of my parents it seems to be fruitful in short term gains but at a long term its effects are worst. You have always cheated and passed, In the future you, achieve a job at a multinational company. Cheating and plagiarizing hurts the student more than it helps, but with a lack of interest and desire to do well, the student may disregard that possibility. Some students may do even better in an environment where cheating is less common because of an honor code, as represented in Alyssa Vangelli’s article. It makes sense that she has criticisms about a new honor code because not everyone will agree, but once it gets revised and makes students want to prevent cheating, students will end up doing better in school. A less excessive amount of writing a code and consequences and more focused on increasing the moral values of maintaining integrity will aid the success rate of students. Additionally, an increased moral value against cheating and a belief in themselves, students will be more encouraged to reduce the amount of cheating that occurs in school.…

Student’s use cheating as a safety net. They use it when they feel like they are in danger, in this case danger can be seen as getting a bad grade. With the pressure others put on the students to be perfect and the best at everything you could see why some might feel the need to use their “safety net”. The solution to lessen cheating is simple, make students feel like they don’t need an easy way out, make them feel comfortable with content, and stop making them so…

In the article “Why I Think Students Should Cheat,” Cevin Soling (2015) argues that even though cheating is wrong, there are many advantages. Students are taught that cheating is wrong because it impacts self-esteem through unearned rewards and stimulates bad habits. However, these points are not valid considering the environment students are put in, where failure is not an option. It can be overwhelming and draw students to take the easy way out, cheating. According to the author, cheating should be done by all students in compulsory schools because it can boost self-esteem, confidence and instill pride.…

However, the pressure to succeed in a classroom setting has become so intense that some students have begun cheating for a variety of reasons. Although I have never cheated myself, I can honestly see the appeal in taking shortcuts when deadlines pile up with no end in sight. Critics of those who cheat can easily point at a cheating student and discuss how poor of a student they are, but the critics never stop to consider the amount of pressure a student truly is under. Cheating has always been considered a terrible act that shows poor character, however, what acts are considered cheating and are not are often fuzzy to students.…
