Do Stalker Ads Creep You Out?
A few months ago I decided to leave home and rent out some office space. I splurged and bought a new office equipment, furniture and general supplies. I’m an avid online shopper and Amazon.com is one of my best friends. Sometimes Amazon can get a little creepy when it decides to stalk me. Over the next month as I settled into the new office, I kept seeing ads for trash cans, binder clips and desk chairs. Although stalking behavior has long been acknowledged as problematic, it was not recognized as a crime until California took legislative action in 1990. Relatively few studies exist that fully explore the psyche of the stalker, in part because this crime has only recently been recognized. However, it is clear that a multitude of factors combine to create stalking behavior. For example, stalkers may be male or female. They may be "motivated by anger, revenge, jealousy, absolute fantasy, or delusion.…

Fear appeal is a term used in psychology, sociology and marketing. It generally describes a strategy for motivating people to take a particular action, endorse a particular policy, or buy a particular product, by arousing fear. " This was accompanied by images of shadowy strangers (hitchhikers) who would presumably do one harm if picked up. The commercial's main appeal was not to the positive features of Prestone anti-freeze, but to the fear of what a "strange" brand might do.…
