A recent online study in the journal Pediatrics states, “1,718 students in the study, 498 were considered overweight or obese (29 percent) based on their body mass index measurements, and 223 fell into the obese sub-category (13 percent)” (edweek.org). The study’s goal was to determine whether the sports decreased childhood obesity. According to edweek.org, “Students who played for three or more sports teams in the past 12 months were 39 percent less likely to be obese and 27 percent less likely to be overweight/obese compared to who didn't participate on any teams” (http://blogs.edweek.org). Those percentiles reveal to the audience that sports have successfully lowered the risk of childhood obesity. Some of those skills include, sportsmanship, leadership skills, and how to be a hard worker. Those skills are much needed in this world. According to Michigan State University “Obtaining leadership qualities that range from being a good character, to respect others, to being task oriented can be accomplished in both team and individual sports. A solid support system, such as a strong parental involvement and effective coaching can help mold a child into being a leader now, and later in life.” (msue.anr.msu.edu). Every child needs to portray good characteristics, and sports help with that. Sports bring children together through sportsmanship. Successful teams usually have students who work well together, and behave appropriately. On Michigan State’s website, my opinion is proven by the statement, “Good sports tend to better cooperate with others and make moral decisions instead of being ego-oriented individuals who behave badly” (Education World).
