Why Do So Many People Think That Elderly Are Misunderstoodly

Decent Essays
“So many people think that seniors are just old people that don’t know anything,” she says. And actually, the camaraderie and knowledge that we can transmit to one another is so wonderful and so helpful.

Seniors are misunderstood and they are being treated like they don´t know anything so kids teach them how to use computers. But the seniors can teach the kids about the past about the wars or about how they made all the old technology.
¨Don´t you set down on the steps ‘Cause you find it's kinder hard.”

This is saying that if you slow down it will be much harder than if you just get it done. I think what it’s really saying is that procrastination is only going to make it harder. So by not procrastinating you’re not giving up.

Throughout the years many generations old and new have been constantly learning new concepts, ideas, technologies, ext. But while these things are amazing there are even more things the generational gap can allow for many more people to understand even more amazing things! Demonstrations of these acts can be found in pieces of literature such as “Grounded,” “An Invisible Thread,” and “Tutors Tech Seniors High-Tech Tricks.” Two generations commit an act that they know could kill each other or if they happen to survive they will both get in major trouble. A child asks her grandmother to drive her to a party even though she is grounded and her grandmother could possibly crash due to her handicaps which limit her from doing somewhat simple tasks including driving.…

Sharon Begley says “who’s to say they are dumb because fewer of them than of their grandparents’ generation care who wrote ontario ‘messia’”(source B). Some older generations would consider someone dumb for not knowing that information but the simple truth is it’s not necessary for people to know now a days. That’s what differs the under thirty generation from those before them, they have the option to choose what they need to know. In a cartoon published by the New Yorker it shows young man choosing what he needs to learn by using a laptop rather than all the old books(source H). Ch4: Culminating Conversation With the advancements in technology, many people see it as a way to expand knowledge, but some will see it as a distraction. In modern day, many of younger people are more dependant on technology, which enabled them to grow differently from the elderly people. This causes many people such as Mark Bauerlein to see the Millennials as the “dumbest generation,” due to how they “lack in general knowledge.” However, the Millennials are not the “dumbest” because of the difference in time and value, socializing, and their motivations to learn.…

For several years I volunteered at a nursing home following the passing of my grandmother. When I first began, I had no prior understanding of the culture of aging beyond my grandma and her friends. Through my experience talking with the residents and observing the facility, along with my studies in public health, I noticed many gaps in the care of the elderly, both in the health care system as well as socially. Multi-generational homes are becoming increasingly more common as aging individuals may need access to caregivers, such as family members, to help with their chronic conditions and disabilities. In someways this may help a family financially as this would eliminate the cost of a nursing facility, however the burden of providing care to a disabled family-member can be very stressful.…

For my reflective essay I have chosen to look at the challenges of working with older people in a health and human service setting and in particular how this would challenge me to work as an effective practitioner in the discipline of nutrition. In the last five years I have worked and spent time with older adults from different settings, some who are healthy and engaged in all areas of their lives, living independently and contributing to their community. I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…

Progress and Conclusion on my Personal Growth The four diversity related topics I’ll be focusing on are: oppression & power, ethnic identity development, ableism and ageism. With the topic of oppression and power, as well as some the exercises we did, sort of made me realized how rough my bringing up and how easy some of the white students had it, regardless of their situation. It also made apparent who had more privilege than others and who was a bit more wary of the power they held with their racial identity. However, those people aren’t me and I would never put myself in their shoes.…
