Why Do Professionals Overpaid

Improved Essays
Cam Newton makes $53,000,000 a year for playing football. That’s $3,312,500 for one of his sixteen games. He is only one of the thousands of professionals being overpaid. I believe that professional athletes and performers should not make the amount of money that do on account of the other men and women who work harder, the money could be used in other ways, and trained athletes and performers influence kids in a negative way. To begin, professionals should not earn large sums of money because other men are as hard-working and receive nothing compared to them. Every time policemen and firefighters go to work, they risk their lives. Last year, an average of 135 policemen and 68 firefighters were killed on the job. Also, teachers are giving children information that they can use for the rest of their lives. Meanwhile, each basket Kobe Bryant scores makes him the same amount of money as …show more content…
Some beer companies sponsor racecar drivers, and when kids watch their role model drinking they will be encouraged to do so too. “If Alex Rodriguez can use steroids, then I can to be sure also to make it onto the baseball team,” is what kids are thinking. Lastly, when kids hear singers saying inappropriate words in their songs, they will want to follow in their footsteps to sound similar to their favorite performer. Brainwashing the soon to be adults is my last reason why trained professionals should not be rewarded with as much money as they are given. In conclusion, professionals should not be paid the amount they are paid. For one, some people work as diligent as athletes and performers but are paid much less. Secondly, people would be able to spend their money more effectively. Lastly, professionals are not benefitting any of the kids. Imagine you are a hardworking doctor or lawyer, and you aren't getting paid the amount you should be. Other people like you who are bettering our community aren't getting paid the amount they should be, and all of your tax money is going towards paying for athletic stadiums. Doctors, teachers, government employees, police officers, firefighters, and lawyers should be receiving the money that athletes receive. Professional athletes provide entertainment for society, but I believe they receive an unreasonable salary. Overall, athletes are overpaid because all they are doing is playing a game to entertain while other more important professions are making much less, they don't contribute to society, there are better places to use the money, and the money received could be used to pay for more useful causes that would benefit our society.…

One reason i feel they are not overpaid is they had earned to be there they had earned to be playing on that field. Also the better you are the more the teams are going to want to pay for you to be on their team. I also know that athletes had injuries that can cost up to $70,000. Like Paul George when he snapped his leg is basketball that costed approximately $65,000 dollars for surgery. One example is Tom Brady he is a 5 time super bowl champ quarterback.…

How much money does a hard-working, very rewarding person such as a doctor, firefighter, someone who risks their life to fight for freedom, or even the president of the United States of America make? Only a fraction of what Cam Newton, quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, makes. Sports involves at least two competitive opponents that compete against each other for entertainment purposes. Millions of people come to watch these events every year, and even one-third of the United States watched the Super Bowl last year. But does this mean that athletes should be paid the astronomical amount that they are?…

Professional athletes, especially NBA players are harshly criticized of their high salaries because many people feel what they do does not amount to what they are being paid. They feel NBA players aren’t contributing enough to be paid on that magnitude. Many people can’t stand that NBA players are paid millions while teachers, doctors, lawyers, or other professions are making nothing compared to them. Many strongly feel that NBA players do nothing more than play a ball game. However, there is a lot that NBA players do that people are unaware of.…

I am personally a collegiate athlete and knows what an athlete goes through. Players shouldn’t get paid millions of dollars like professional athletes, because why would players go on to try and play professionally. On the contrary they should deserve some type of revenue whether it's for clothes shopping, take someone out on a date, gas money, etc. For example that’s the same thing as me asking my friend to do something for me and he does all the work while I sit back and relax.…

Many people have recently raised controversy on the subject of whether college athletes should be paid or not. The student athletes feel they should be paid for their performance on the field due to the fact that they spend most of their free time on the field or court practicing the sport they love and they cannot afford to manage school, sports, and a healthy sleep life style on top of working to be able to afford things. College athletes should not be paid for their performance on the field. The student athletes should not be paid to play because they are in school for education, this could cause issues for colleges with auctioning, this can cause money problems for the student athletes, and sports are not a job they are a choice. Student…

The average salary of a professional NBA player is about 5.15 million dollars. When one takes this massive amount of dough and compares it to the average salary of a middle class citizen, which ranges from 42,000 dollars to 125,000 dollars, one would notice that the NBA player makes substantially more than the average citizen. Professional athletes should have smaller salaries because jobs that save lives get payed way less, ---, and the money they are getting could be used to help the community. When looking at the paychecks of athletes and the paychecks of people in the military or people who are doctors, you would realize, the athlete gets more money. This is completely and utterly absurd.…

They are growing up and need to learn how to live on their own without mom and dad sending them money all the time, there is not time for a job. While the college coaches are making six figures, these athletes are lucky to even get 100 dollars. Many argue that Paying these athletes would lose competitiveness of the sports but they are wrong because, many professional athletes get paid by their performance, so it’s a competition to be the best you can be so you can get paid at the most possible. The money that these athletes make for their school, doesn’t even contribute to their universities at all because if they did their would be more academic opportunities in america. I think it is important to pay these athletes because, many don’t have wealthy parents that can support them while they are in college, these athletes have no one to rely on.…

The statement in which they ask if we believe it is fair that professional athletes and society entertainers get paid millions of dollars are year, while professionals who provide essential services do not is a bit flawed. The question is flawed because those are two professions cannot be compared. How does one compare an individual who trains all day and all night to become the best in world, verse someone who may just show up for their shift and leave. The reason why I say they are incomparable is because the two professions of an athlete, and teacher or nurse is that they are not on the same playing field or even same stadium. Professional athletes train and participate in their sport starting at the average age of 5.…
