Steroids are alive and well in sports today. Not until the 1960’s was the use of performance-enhancing drugs by professional athletes acknowledged as a problem (CITE). Today, steroids are widely known throughout all levels of sports, and are prohibited in all of them. Even though there are rules in professional sports as well as collegiate, athletes still find a way to consume them, even though they are aware of the consequences. Athletes not only have to be aware of the repercussions of breaking rules, but the health effects that are involved with taking steroids. If steroids were taught more to the youth, not just the history of it, but the health effects of steroids, and the trouble that can arise if caught, one could assume that less would consume steroids to not only stay to stay out trouble with the law but to also stay healthy in the short and long run. …show more content…
Using steroids are very popular for athletes that want to optimize their training, steroids have similar effects of testosterone, which affects muscle building. Many take steroids to help with one’s muscle mass and strength. Though that may look very appealing to some, the health effects offset why one would ever want to touch steroids. The use of steroids in men decrease levels of luteinizing hormone as well as follicle-stimulating hormones, which leads to an overall decrease in testosterone production, and testicular atrophy (CITE). Testosterone is necessary for a male body because it helps regulate bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass, and strength (CITE). With a decrease in testosterone, one would have a harder time keeping the human body
