Why Do Professional Athletes Get Paid

Improved Essays
Wouldn’t it be great to earn $270 million just to play a simple game? Neymar, along with other professional athletes think so. But do these athletes deserve all of this money? The answer is absolutely not. Professional athletes are paid way too much in a society where salary is suppose to be based on a job’s economic importance. Teaching is one of the most important economical jobs because our future economy relies on it, yet teachers are making a fraction of what professional athletes are making. A teacher's average yearly salary is approximately 55,000. That is equivalent to about a third of what Floyd Mayweather Jr. made during the Mayweather and McGregor fight PER SECOND. Police officers, firefighters, and doctors all save lives while risking their own yet only get paid a fraction of what professional athletes get paid. Even the most important man in our nation, the president, is working hard to revive our nation and gets paid $400,000 while the lowest salary for a unproven NBA rookie is $490,000 which is absurd considering their state in econimcial importance There are many people in this world that work twice as much as an athlete does yet barely get anything when compared to a professional athlete. Although professional athletes work very hard day in and day out and have worked hard ever since they were young, they do not deserve the huge salaries they are getting especially not when there are other people working just as hard if not harder than them just to put food on the table and support their families. All the extra money that athletes are getting should be going towards education or paying teachers or other occupations that are very important to our community such as police officers, firefighters, or even people in the military who left their families to protect and fight for our

When asked in a debate if they are overpaid or not there were advocates for both sides and a lot of the people who thought they weren’t overpaid had reasons a lot like “They are being rewarded for their hard work and dedication” (“Are Football Players Overpaid”). This is true, they did work for this their whole lives and it was not easy by any means; however, the same could be said for everyone who takes hard classes in high school and college in order to pursue a job that requires a high gpa. That is also very hard work, it may not be physically hard but it is mentally difficult and they need to dedicate just as much time to their studies as football players need to dedicate to their practices. Despite this, they are not making $2,100,000 every year. They worked hard, they dedicated their whole lives to getting to this job.…

There are people that argue that college athletes are paid enough by the scholarships that they acquire to the big Universities. They are worth according to Jeffery Dorfman author of “Pay College Athletes? They’re Already Paid Up To $125,000 Per Year” he argues that “a student athlete at a major conference school on full scholarship is likely receiving a package of education, room, board, and coaching/training worth between $50,000 and $125,000 per year depending on their sport and whether they attend a public or private university” (Dorfman). People don’t believe that there should be money going into these athletes pockets because they are on scholarships and that should be enough.…

Professional athletes, especially NBA players are harshly criticized of their high salaries because many people feel what they do does not amount to what they are being paid. They feel NBA players aren’t contributing enough to be paid on that magnitude. Many people can’t stand that NBA players are paid millions while teachers, doctors, lawyers, or other professions are making nothing compared to them. Many strongly feel that NBA players do nothing more than play a ball game. However, there is a lot that NBA players do that people are unaware of.…

I am personally a collegiate athlete and knows what an athlete goes through. Players shouldn’t get paid millions of dollars like professional athletes, because why would players go on to try and play professionally. On the contrary they should deserve some type of revenue whether it's for clothes shopping, take someone out on a date, gas money, etc. For example that’s the same thing as me asking my friend to do something for me and he does all the work while I sit back and relax.…

The average salary of a professional NBA player is about 5.15 million dollars. When one takes this massive amount of dough and compares it to the average salary of a middle class citizen, which ranges from 42,000 dollars to 125,000 dollars, one would notice that the NBA player makes substantially more than the average citizen. Professional athletes should have smaller salaries because jobs that save lives get payed way less, ---, and the money they are getting could be used to help the community. When looking at the paychecks of athletes and the paychecks of people in the military or people who are doctors, you would realize, the athlete gets more money. This is completely and utterly absurd.…

They are growing up and need to learn how to live on their own without mom and dad sending them money all the time, there is not time for a job. While the college coaches are making six figures, these athletes are lucky to even get 100 dollars. Many argue that Paying these athletes would lose competitiveness of the sports but they are wrong because, many professional athletes get paid by their performance, so it’s a competition to be the best you can be so you can get paid at the most possible. The money that these athletes make for their school, doesn’t even contribute to their universities at all because if they did their would be more academic opportunities in america. I think it is important to pay these athletes because, many don’t have wealthy parents that can support them while they are in college, these athletes have no one to rely on.…

“People complain that professional athletes get paid too much, but what they don’t understand is that we need a lot of money because we spend a lot of money,” is a quote from Patrick Ewing, a famous NBA star. His quote directly shows that athletes are being paid too much. For example athletes get paid a great deal more than the working class. They also get paid way more than surgeons, who save lives. There are also orphanages who barely make enough money to keep the kids safe.…
