Do Professional Athletes Deserve the Big Bucks? Have you ever heard of the green-eyed monster? William Shakespeare’s Iago was probably the first to use that term in all of human history in the play Othello, when he said, “Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy! It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock The meat it feeds on.” --- Othello, William Shakespeare
So, the green-eyed monster is the beast of jealousy, as in “green with envy.” If you are human, that

They stayed after normal practice time to get better-- in junior high, in high school, and in college. They worked really hard. Plus, these athletes are not paid based on the imaginary abilities of the normal “couch potato” fan. They are paid based on the reality of how they stack up against their competing sports peers, who are normally the greatest athletes at what they do in the world (“6 Reasons Why Professional Athletes Are Not Overpaid”). Victims of the green-eyed monster really need to think about that before they start wanting to transfer the athlete’s money to themselves. Plus, using logic, the real reason professional athletes are paid high wages is because the entertainment market in competitive sports is extremely large. Sports fans pay big bucks to go see them play in stadiums, and advertisers pay high dollars to be associated with them on TV. Plus, and this is really important, the money that they make comes from private enterprises that are willing to pay for those athletes’ abilities. Abilities that are always equal to what their employers feel they are worth (Callahan). These athletes are not paid by the government. They are competing for all they are worth in a market driven economy, not being paid by what taxpayers think they are

What many fail to realize is that college athletes often stress over paying for daily necessities. Further compensation would elude some of the common stresses college athletes have on a daily basis such as buying food, paying for gas, and many other essential living needs. In addition, no matter how famous a player may be it is a violation of the rules for a player to profit from their fame. In fact college athletes can be fined for violating many strict rules or regulations.…

They feel NBA players aren’t contributing enough to be paid on that magnitude. Many people can’t stand that NBA players are paid millions while teachers, doctors, lawyers, or other professions are making nothing compared to them. Over the past few years college athletics have gained tons of popularity and exposure all over America through television, the internet, and social media. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and participating colleges have earned increased revenues because of all the exposure that they have acquired. Even though the NCAA makes millions of dollars from sponsors, commercials, and tournaments, the players who play for the college teams receive no compensation whatsoever for all their hard work and dedication. Imagine being a dedicated worker working long hours far from home every single day, doing college work and studying for exams, bringing in millions of dollars to an employer and not getting paid at all for working hard. That is basically what all college athletes are going through when they work hard everyday in school, go to practice, win games on TV, and do not benefit from the profits that they helped earn for a revenue producing sport at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member institution.…

College athletes provide entertainment for their school and millions of other people, but they are still not getting paid for their extreme work ethic, their commitment to their sport or school and most importantly, because of the amount of money they help the school to make. The NCAA makes billions of dollars each year because of the ability of their players to entertain a crowd. Even with all of this money coming in they still don’t have to pay their players. So essentially they have built a business system that generates billions each year off of the hard work of these players and they don’t have to pay them for it. Most…

For example: Marcus Mariota wows fans as the quarterback of the University of Oregon Ducks the 20 year olds sophomore from Hawaii help the school earn millions of dollars through ticket sales, advertising, and TV deals ,but like all college athletes Mariota does not earn a penny(Zissou, 2013). Why are these athletes not getting paid for all those victories that made the college millions and athletes cannot have a little portion of that money. The colleges are using all of these all the athletes as money makers for that institute because there are no values for performance all the college is to make money selling everything for money or advertising. One of the cases that NCAA system is facing the notable case of former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon is suing for former athlete’s entitlement to compensation for further use of image after graduating (Holton, 2014). Many of the critics of college athletics have the viewpoint that many college athletes, especially the large market athletes, are being “used” in a sense to bring in immense amounts of money towards the institutions, but in no way are the athletes reimbursed for the profit they helped to bring into the university. Another valid argument that agrees that college athletes should be paid is the “big business” side of collegiate athletics (Sanderson). College sports have a market that rivals that of professional sports, with multi billion-dollar revenue, all from athletes that will never see any of that profit. With the massive amount of profit what these institutions are doing could also be seen as a form of “abuse”, colleges are taking advantage of the talent that these players naturally have and have worked for, in the process these Universities are making hundreds of millions off of these athletes. The top tier basketball and football programs in the country make well over a million dollars of revenue ever season (Finnegan),…

The debate on whether college athletes should be rewarded for their dedication to sports through payment has many different arguments to it. Although some would argue that athletes do not deserve to be paid, it would be fair for them to receive compensation for their hard work. College athletes should be paid because they deserve it based on the amount of the work they put into their lifestyle, the college sports industry would be more than able to afford it, and it is immoral and possibly illegal to prevent the athletes from being paid. Critics to this idea argue that there are already enough advantages given for being a student-athlete such as: generous scholarships, exposure to future contract opportunities, and access to beneficial networks (Text 3, lines 23,26-28). This is not entirely accurate, however, because many athletes struggle with maintaining a stable financial situation.…

The categories of what makes up monster and human characteristics are not simply opposites, yet they help define each other. Cohen’s theses, both “The Monster Is the Harbinger of Category Crisis” and “The Monster Stands at the Threshold… of Becoming” helps support the theory that human characteristics show forth in monstrosity and monstrosity in heroism. The qualities found in monsters and humans help define each other, especially in Beowulf. Beowulf is a young warrior from Geatland who travels to Denmark to help Hrothgar who is the King.…

For some people, a monster may be a person or character (animated or not) that does harmful actions or that his appearance looks unpleasant to his surroundings. Yet, not every person sees it at the same way. For instance, if a person named Rafado sees a man throwing trash in the street, at first glance, Rafado may see him as a monster by the fact that the man did an unpleasant action in his view. However, for some people that do not care about the environment or street that action seems irrelevant, making acceptable to believe that each people may have their own personal classification to a monster. The approach to what may be a monster may seem to be related to what a monstrosity may be by the fact that the term ‘monstrosity’ be a derivative from the word monster.…

“People complain that professional athletes get paid too much, but what they don’t understand is that we need a lot of money because we spend a lot of money,” is a quote from Patrick Ewing, a famous NBA star. His quote directly shows that athletes are being paid too much. For example athletes get paid a great deal more than the working class. They also get paid way more than surgeons, who save lives. There are also orphanages who barely make enough money to keep the kids safe.…
