Women's Entry Into Prostitution

Women engage in every type of criminal activity. Much like their male counterparts, females involved in a variety of different types of crime. Every day more and more women are getting involve in crimes and the criminal justice system. While female crimes of violence are highly sensationalized by the media, these crimes are rare occurrences. All the media cares about at the moment is their ratings, their interest has nothing to do with helping people or spreading the truth. The majority of female offending is made up of crimes that are nonviolent in nature or are considered victimless crimes. Many sociologist and criminologist are trying to the find the reason why women get into the life of prostitution. Many of them have concluded that women get pulled into prostitution because of their economic and structural conditions, it might be a cultural norm depending on where they are from, and personal experiences during childhood such as past abuse or drug addiction. I think that they are right but it doesn’t really clearly explain as to why certain factors shape women’s entrance into prostitution. To clarify, one pathway that accounts entry into prostitution is her childhood victimization, which includes physical abuse, sexual molestation, and incest. Research have shown that this leads to the child running away to escape from the assaults which in some cases lead prostitution. Although males sometimes go through that victimization phase during their youth years, after running away they tend to focus on other crimes such as robbery and robbery. The second pathway that leads females into prostitution is the differential association theory. They were raised in a neighborhood that accepted it and maybe they had some friends or family members involve in it and they saw all of the money they were making. Sentencing policies such as the mandatory minimum sentences and the war on drugs initiative have played a great part of the women in prison. These initiative were initiated to reduce sentencing disparities, instead it has played a great effect of an increase in women imprisonment. The rise in the female prison meant that many facilities that were already crowded are now way overcrowded. Which results in a strain on basic resources within the facility and impacts the delivery of service to women. not only did women was unable to receive treatment that was needed, but also the staff was unable to recognize when women were at risk for negative mental health
