Why Do Police Use Stricter Gun Control?

Advancements in technology have allowed police agencies to acquire new devices that make their job more efficient and safe. The Taser gun also known as the stun-gun is one of the devices that many law enforcement agencies have introduced over the past several years. According to Michael D. White and Justine Ready from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, there are over 8,000 law enforcement agencies that have adopted the stun-gun (pg. 1, 2007). The main purpose of the stung-gun is to stop suspects who resist arrest or act violently towards police officers. Over the past several years there has been lots of controversy on weather police officers should be allowed to use this device to subdue incompliant suspects. There are various situation were a suspect has died after being tased by a stun-gun. Another reason is that there is no strict protocol on when the stun-gun should be used by police officers. There have been instances were children and even grandparents have been tased by stun-guns. Lastly, stun-guns can create weapon confusion in a situation where police officers have to react within a matter of seconds. There has been occasion where police officers have mistaken their firearms for their stun-guns and have shot a suspect. On the other hand, there are those individuals who argue that stun-guns have many benefits. One of the major arguments is that stun-guns give police officers an option to use a weapon of less lethal force. Stun-guns allow police officers to control situations where the use of a firearm would have been applicable. A second argument is that the stun-gun is far more effective and less harmful than previously used methods of less lethal force. Lastly, research has shown that stun-guns have saved far more lives than they have taken. There have not been many deaths directly related to the use of …show more content…
Just recently in Tulsa Oklahoma suspect Erick Harris was killed by 73-year old reserve deputy Robert Bates. The deputy claims that he mistakenly pulled out his fire-arm instead of his stun-gun. In the video that was presented for the case; you can hear Robert Bates apologizing for shooting the suspect. Weapon confusion can be caused by several different factors. Muscle memory can be one of the major factors that contribute to weapon confusion. The journal Muscle Memory and the Somaesthetic Pathologies of everyday life found that “Much of the memory we productively employ in everyday life is implicit memory that results from habit” (Richard Shusterman, Pg. 1, 2011). The research done by Richard Shusterman is able to explain why muscle memory plays a role in weapon confusion incidents. Police officers draw out their weapons on the day to day basis and this becomes a habit. Therefore, when a police officer engages in a high intensity situation with a suspect and they have to react within a matter of seconds; it is plausible that muscle memory will play a role. Individuals who are against stun-guns recommend that law enforcement agencies provide the proper training to their officers. Also it is advised that governing laws related to stun-guns be revised and made

TASERs are a hand-held electronic restraining and compliance device that delivers a paralyzing charge used as another alternative of less-lethal force by law enforcement. TASERS can be deployed at greater ranges than the close proximity of OC pepper sprays. When deployed at the target, it produces 50,000 volts of electricity and temporarily stuns and disables the suspect. Often after TASER deployment, the suspect immediately falls down and is taken into custody with little to no resistance. Consider a scenario whereas a police officer has already pepper-sprayed a violent man, who then decided to advance at the officer while clenching his fists.…

I believe that policy 2 that states, Law prohibits rapid fire, fully automatic machine guns, but allows semi-automatic assault rifles is constitional. According to the Second Admendment, a well regulated Militia is the key phrase. I interpet the Second Admendment as a means to regulate the firerate instead of the type of firearm itself. Semi-automatic weapons, specifically the AR-15 is one of the most commonly owned rifles in the United…

In many cases Tasers have been used on people who pose no threat to themselves or others which supports the point that they are not used in self-defence, but to enforce obedience and to torture police captives. Media reports and research shows that Tasers are not only being exposed against individuals who display no threat but also on children, pregnant women and elderly people (Ryan 2008). An example of police officers using Tasers in a harmful form was reported by Dennis Eggstion from the Western Australia Aboriginal Legal Service, who stated that in 2010 there were several Taser attacks on aboriginal people. The attack included a young pregnant woman who was Tasered several times whilst being 6 months into her pregnancy and an aboriginal man who was Tasered between the eyes who caught fire and suffered serious burns (Benedik…

In years following September 11, 2001 and Hurricane Katrina, cases of police brutality spiked. In the 2000s, police departments started using tasers for an alternative to other deadly forces, which caused more than 150 suspects to die after the device was used on them (Wihbey and Kille). The weapons were used with greater frequency on people of color (Wihbey and Kille).…

When police officers get into a gun fight with a suspect it can result in injury of a civilian because bullets start to fly everywhere. Police officers can at times resolve issues by the use of a stun-gun before they escalade into a gun fight. There are no long lasting effects that result from a stun-gun. The stun-gun only temporarily immobilizes the suspect, but after a few minutes they will regain full mobility of their body. There have been a few cases were the use of a stun-gun might have been excessive use of force, but overall stun-guns are effective and save…

Gun violence in America Gun violence is an all-time high. In the wake of Sandy Hook, widespread concern forced legislators to take a second glance at our gun laws. When twenty children and six educators were gunned down, many citizens were stunned, outraged, and begged authorities to pass more crucial gun laws because with fewer guns, there could possibly be fewer incidents involving gun violence. Many people believe that the widespread availability of guns is making society unsafe. Each year, nearly 100,000 Americans are shot, 32,000 of them die, 47 children are shot every day, and eight of them die, according to the U.S. News Digital Weekly.…

One of the top three things that liberals and conservatives tend to fight about 24/7 is gun control. Liberals tend to believe that with stricter gun control laws there will be a decrease in gun violence. While conservatives tend to think that with stricter gun control laws won 't just breach the second amendment but it will also cause more gun related violence. In the online article “OUR OPINION: Gun Owners ' Support Needed to Stop Mass Killings” by The Editorial Board written for CentralMain.com, The Editorial Board states how conservatives are the ones that hold the key in order to make any changes with the gun control laws, they also go on about how Americans should stop throwing the same old arguments at each other and actually do something…

Abstract This research paper is about police brutality and whether or not they should be allowed to use the force of a stun-gun, chokehold, and baton. It also discusses the topic on when enough is enough - concerning overkills and excessive choke holds. They have the power to get way with brutally murdering someone just because their job involves that. With that power comes great responsibility of knowing when and where to use what weapon and when not to use a weapon at all.…

The use of weapons such as a Taser or gun to defend themselves is not brutality. Brutality is the use of excessive force put upon a person that was not necessarily needed. For an example, there are people who are committing crimes and violating the law, but yet whenever they get caught or something happens to them they say that the officer used wrongful force towards them. There are so many different situations in which no one knows what really happened. Also, the media takes a toll on the situations and make them out to be more than what they really were.…

According to Jill Lepore, a Harvard professor of United States History, a 1991 poll in the US found that people were more likely to know of the Second Amendment: the “right to bear arms” than they were to know the First: the freedom of speech, religion, and assembly (Lepore). This startling fact clearly shows that US citizens prioritize guns very highly, perhaps over our own freedom. However, the interpretation of the Second Amendment as the right of citizens to carry any and all types of guns wherever they want, is misconceived. The actual Amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”. At the time the Amendment was written,…
