The Pursuit of Happyness is a film based on a true story about a single father, Chris Gardner, who grew up in a difficult and abusive childhood. He barely ever saw his dad and even worse he was raped by a man. At the age of 22 he moved to the West Coast to make a living. To make money he started working as a salesman in the medical supply field. Chris and his son didn’t have anywhere to sleep so they were sleeping in public restrooms, subway trains, and shelters. He and his son went through so many horrific things throughout their lives up until Chris was offered a job as a stockbroker. Even though there are frustrating obstacles in the United States, like unemployment rates and significant amounts of money residing with the wealthy population, this country “has the largest and most technologically powerful economy in the world” (Roemer 618). With a powerful economy like this, many people should be able to achieve what they are looking for. The only thing that should determine whether or not they achieve their dream is how hard they work at trying to get it. Some examples of people that worked hard to achieve their American Dream are Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg. These people came from a variety of social classes. There are many factors that determine whether or not the American Dream is achievable for Americans. These factors can range from homelessness to just plain laziness. If you want the American Dream then you have to do everything that it takes to achieve it. What you want isn’t going to just be handed to you. You actually have to work for what you want. If you don’t work for what you want then you aren’t going to be successful or have all of the things that you want in life.
