Why then is GMO so bad? Crops spread, whether it’s from the seeds blowing in the wind or a mix up while planting. When the genetically modified crops spread into neighbouring organic crops, over time the organic crops become contaminated with the genetically modified ones. There may also become a lack of variety in certain food types for example large corporations may pressure farmers into only growing crops that suit their profitability. For example, major food outlets such as McDonalds already pressure farmers to grow the types of potatoes that they prefer for their fries.
When big business interest develops genetically modified product they have ownership of it and farmers must get permission and even pay the company to use that product. The big business can then use their influence to control the worlds agriculture and manipulate the market. This could lead to poorer countries going without food. Also, as non-GM crops become contaminated big corporations can lay claim to ownership of those crops.
In third world countries, poorer farmers have been tricked into growing coffee instead of food by big businesses who offer good prices but then cut the price to keep the poor farmers in debt and under their control. These countries then do not produce enough food to feed their own population. This sort of manipulation could become more widespread as company’s gain control of GM
