Out of the thirty surveys, 19 out of 30 (63%) individuals have texted while driving and 11 out of 30 (37%) of the individuals have never texted while driving. The younger the individuals were that took the survey said they have texted while driving and over the age of 50 said they did not text and drive. Most of the answers that I received of why they text and drive or believe others do is because: they are impatient, think they are good at multitasking, the text may be important, are addicted to their phones, and because they are ignorant. However, for both the yes and the no answers, all of the individuals knew of the dangers that texting and driving can bring upon yet so many people continue to text and drive. The number one answer I received when asked what dangers texting and driving can bring upon society was a fatal accident. There was then a tie for the second reason including not paying attention to the road, hurting others, and death. I then asked if they had been in a car with someone else that was texting while driving, and I received 27 out of 30 that have, and only 3 out of 30 that answered no. 26 out of the 27 individuals that have been in cars with texting drivers said to have felt scared for their life, uncomfortable, and have even told them to get off their phones. Even though most of these individual’s text and drive, 95.7% of them said that they saw texting and driving very unacceptable. 87.7% also strongly supported laws to restrict using cell phones usage for reading texts, sending texts, and emailing while driving. AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety also reported that most of the individuals that texted while driving were those between the ages of 19-39 while those of 60 years of age or older were found to use hands free devices. According to Steven J. Seiler (2015), there are many sociological social factors that contribute to the cause of texting and driving. It was found that people who talk on the phone and drive are more likely to text and drive as well. They learn how to incorporate their social life to technological interactions. Individuals also text at inappropriate places such as the movies, meetings, and family dinners. In effect, these individuals are the ones texting and driving because they have no limitations set on when not to use their phones. Another sociological factor is that texting is now seen as part of the norms of society. Texting and driving is a learned behavior that is reinforced by observing others engaged in texting while driving.
